Grant Aid and recognition for up and coming talent

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council in partnership with the Local Sports Council provide a grant scheme to assist sports men and women in their efforts to achieve full National, International and Olympic honours. Grants are available to provided assistance with travelling and coaching expenses, qualifications, and equipment and clothing requirements.

Grant Aid application forms are available on request from the Borough Council (01256 845442) and must be submitted by the end of November to the Local Sports Council (Basingstokelsc1@aol.com) - Sue Hillyard, 3 Dragonfly Drive, Lychpit, Basingstoke, Hampshire, RG24 8RU (01256 811478)

Applications are welcome annually between 1st September and 30th November with applicants being at least County Standard or equivalent within their sport and priority will be given to Under 25’s. Applications should be fully supported by the coach and club of the applicant and also include any other additional information that would support the grant application e.g. Press Releases.

Applicants for Grant Aid are also automatically considered for the Basingstoke & Deane Annual Sports Awards and for scholarship support from the Basingstoke Sports Trust.


JUNIOR LADIES 2007


After careful review of 37 candidates for last year’s Junior Ladies award, the list was reluctantly reduced to a final 12 who attended the award evening at the Apollo Hotel on 29th February.

Sally Chui – Biathlon

Sally is an excellent all round sportsperson who competed in the European Biathlon Championships held in Italy finishing in 2nd place then she participated in the World Series winning the event. Sally then travelled to Monaco to compete in the World Biathlon Championships coming in at 18th position after a swim and a run. Her aim for the future is to qualify for the Olympics.

Annabel Colenutt – Free Ice Skating
Annabel qualified to US Novice Standard achieving Silver Medal at the British Ice Dance and Figure skating Championships. Annabel is a totally committed skater who trains 4 mornings a week before school as well as Saturdays and some Sundays. She finished in 5th place in the Sheffield US British Qualifiers and 10th in the Lee Valley US junior British Qualifiers.

Lisa Collingridge – Disabled Swimming
Lisa is an outstanding swimmer with great potential who has gained in self confidence to compete at a high level. Lisa’s highlight this year was qualifying for the British Championships where she won a Gold medal in the 100 metre Individual Medley and 3 Silver Medals in the 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke for people with learning disabilities.

Holly Croxford – Athletics
Holly had had another successful year and earned inclusion to the Great Britain squad for the 2nd time at the European Junior Championships. Holly received the Silver Medal in the UK under 20 Championships in the 200metres and is ranked 2nd for the 200 and 400 metres in the UK. Holly’s hopes are to progress to the World Junior Championships.

Rebecca Curtis-Harris – Athletics
Rebecca started the athletic season at the bottom of her age group but undeterred she entered the English Schools 75m hurdles receiving the Bronze Medal and the English Schools Pentathlon reaching 7th position. Rebecca was 1st in the South of England Pentathlon and was County Champion at 75m Hurdles, 100m, 200m and Pentathlon an achievement to be proud of.

Leanne Ganney – Ice Hockey
Leanne was picked for the first ever Women’s Great Britain Under 18 team participating in Zurich producing a strong performance contributing to the success of the team. Unfortunately Leanne had to withdraw from the England trip to the Czech Republic due to lack of funding. Leanne is expected to progress into the Senior Squad.

Victoria Heath-Smith – Ice Dance
Victoria is a hugely talented skater who became British Champion this year competing against girls up to 3 years older than herself. Victoria was 2nd in the British Solo Ice Dance Qualifier, 1st in the intermediate Free Dance held in Nottingham and 1st in the intermediate free Dance in Sheffield. Her aims are to represent Great Britain in International Competitions.

Rebecca Jane – Football
An exceptionally talented footballer Rebecca has travelled to Finland and Georgia to represent England in the under 17 age group. The England team won all of their 6 games playing against 3 other countries on each trip. Rebecca also represented England in the Four Nations Tournament against Finland, Sweden and Norway. Rebecca won the Michael Austin Harlick Outstanding Sportsperson Award for football.

Kate Matalli – Triathlon/Cycling/Rowing
Kate has had a busy year showing exceptional talent gaining a Silver medal in the under 12 British Schools Cycling National Hill Climb Championships. Kate was 1st in the British Cycling Hillingdon Race series and has received many other Gold and Silver Medals for Duathlon/Triathlon. Kate also excels in rowing ranked number 1in the World in the under 12, 500 metres Concept II and under 13, concept II 2000 metres rowing. Kate is currently ranked number 1 in the British GB National Rankings for 2007.

Hannah Parker – Modern Pentathlon
Hannah is just 11 years old and is a very talented, promising Modern Pentathlete. She has competed in a number of National competitions finishing between 6th and 18th position in all of them. Hannah competed in the World Biathlete Tour of Italy and finished a creditable 3rd. Another of her skills is distance running finishing in 5th position in the Junior Great South Run out of hundreds of competitors.

Allana Penny - Gymnastics
Allana is a very dedicated talented and popular member of the Gymnastics tumbling squad. Never missing training in a demanding sport and Basingstoke schools champion 2007. She is aiming for the National squad, Euro and World Championships and competing in the World Cup 2007 tumbling she was 2nd in qualifiers and 4th in the finals, a great result.

Michaela Walker – Ice Hockey
Michaela participated in a tournament in France as a member of the Great Britain under 18 Women’s Ice Hockey Team. She is a solid and confident player whose impact upon the squad was outstanding. Michaela took part in the European Championships reaching 3rd place in the round. Her aim for the future is to become part of the Senior Great Britain Team.

Other talented junior ladies who were considered for these awards and the majority also awarded grant aid were - Jessica Clement (Athletics), Laura Freeman (Ice Skating), Thalia, Sian & Marissa Laing (Judo), Devon Holt, Alicia McComish, Megan Horwood & Stephanie Prior (Rugby), Rohan Maynard & Jenna Waite (Biathlon), Rhian Jenkins (Badminton), Kerry Collisson, Alicia & Naomi Hughes-White, Tanisha Clayton, Yasmine Taite, Elise Nunn (Gymnastics), Colleen Reilly (Taekwondo), Stephanie Catlin, Kelsey Mosquera, Holly Edwards & Rachel Whiteside (Tennis), Olivia Goodenough & Morgan Sadler (Dance)



JUNIOR MEN 2007



Twelve finalists were selected for the Junior Men’s category in the Basingstoke & Deane Sports Awards sponsored by the Gazette and co-ordinated by the Voluntary Local Sports Council. These attended the awards evening on February 29th at the Apollo Hotel.

Thomas Baker – Basketball
Thomas plays at a high level in the National Basketball League, he plays in 2 games every weekend with the Solent Kestrels under 18’s. Thomas is dedicated to being the best player and has made a huge commitment to his chosen sport. His college team reached the final of the Hants Cup for 1st year students and he aims to gain selection for the National Men’s team.

Timothy Brownstone – Show Jumping/Eventing/Tetrathlon
Tim was a competitor in the Show Jumping Championships of Great Britain finishing in 3rd place overall completing the jump off with a clear round. Tim rides for the Garth South Pony Club, is an exceptionally talented horseman and a regular competitor for his club. His goal is to affiliate in either British Eventing or the British Show Jumping Association.

Jonathan Evans – Table Tennis
Jonathan retained his County under 13 title at the Hampshire Junior Closed Championships. He is currently placed at 4th in the under 13 England rankings and has had a busy year entering 23 National Tournaments winning 2, runner up in 2 and a semi and quarter finalists in others. Jonathan is the Basingstoke under 18 Champion who aims to stay Hampshire Champion and improve his England ranking.

Charles Howard-Jones – Ice Skating
Charles follows a tough routine training 5 times a week starting at 5a.m. Due to injury this season he has only been able to enter 1 competition the Oxford Open men’s level 8 winning the gold medal. Prior to injury Charles has had numerous successes and as he continues to improve has a good chance of achieving his goal of becoming British Senior Champion.

Daniel Lannigan – Tumbling/Trampolining
Daniel competed at the Regional Grading in Bracknell finishing in 2nd place after completing a double somersault for the first time. Daniel was also entered into his first ever International Tumbling Competition held in Poland giving an excellent performance achieving 4th position. He intends to be chosen for the British Tumbling Squad and qualify for grade 1 in the future.

Kieran Maynard – Biathlon/Swimming
Kieran competed in Italy in a World Tour event leading from start to finish, he then qualified for the World Championships achieving 10th position. Kieran finished in 3rd place in the World Series and in the GB Series won races 1 and 2. His goal for the future is to achieve 1st place in the World Tour.

Ben Peggs – Fencing
Ben has had another exceptional season competing in at least 10 competitions, of which 5 have been National and 5 International. Ben has now become a full time athlete and has moved into the junior under 20 category. He had a great start to the season with 2 last 8 finishes in two out of the four strongest National Senior Open Competitions. Ben has achieved more in the last three and a half years of competing than most British Fencers do in their lifetime.

David Rees – Rugby
David has had a very impressive year representing his County, captaining the South West of England and representing England in the under 16 age group. David is a member of the London Irish Elite Player Development Team and has still found time to motivate and assist coaching junior players at the club.

Marc Richardson – Volleyball
Marc only took up Volleyball 2 years ago and since then has been selected for the England Juniors and is currently training and playing for Reading Aces in the NVL Div 2. Marc was selected as a Super Six Player at a National Tournament which meant he was the best player in his position at the competition.

Grant Rounding – Ice Hockey/Roller Hockey
Grant plays in the under 18 Bracknell Drones Team and has been selected to captain the team. Grant’s team are currently at the top of the English Ice Hockey Associations South Division one league and he has also played for the Bracknell Senior Team. Grant’s other talent is Roller Hockey where he is a member of the Guilford-based Storm Club who were the National Champions. Grant has been selected for an extensive trial programme for the Great Britain National under 16 Team.

David Shepperd – Modern Pentathlon
David finished a creditable 2nd place in this years Triathlon Championships winning the shoot. David’s riding and fencing are continuing to improve at a rapid pace and finishing in 7th place at the National Pentathlon was no mean feat for only his second Pentathlon. His aim for the future is to be selected for the Tetrathlon and Pentathlon GB team.

Matthew Waissen – Tennis
Matthew is the age 16 and 18 County Champion and also the 18’s Doubles Champion. He finished 8th in the country at the Winter Grand Prix, won the 16’s Malvern Open and won the Gerrard Cross Tournament. Matthew qualified for the 18’s ITF in Belgium winning 3 rounds. Once he has finished college he has set himself the goal to turn professional.
