Junior and Senior Teams
With such a diverse number of sports within Basingstoke & Deane competing at a wide range of levels, nominations for these awards are normally strong and difficult to establish a clear winner -
Junior Award Nominations considered for the 2007 award were -
B’Stoke & North Hants U.15 Cricket Team This team won through to the last 8 of the ECB National Club Cricket competition finishing 5th out of 1,704 teams nationally. This achieved the best ever placing in the Hampshire U15 finals of any Hampshire team which everyone at the club is extremely proud of. The team also won the Hampshire Cricket Club County Cup alongside winning the North Hants U15 Division A title.
B’Stoke Junior Team Gym In 2007 the team has continued to prove its excellence with the rise of the Junior squad who have spent months working incredibly hard training to continually improve skill and teamwork levels. The team took gold at the qualifying competition for the British Championships also gaining the highest floor score of the day. At the British Championships the girls found themselves in the strongest group including 3 former British Champions. However, they all performed very well to capture the bronze medal improving six places from 2006.
Wessex Wyverns Tri & Biathletes 2007 was a very successful year for the young team with eight biathletes helping the British team to medal success in the Italian round of the Biathlete World Tour. The event was the high spot of the season for the squad who have also achieved success in the domestic biathlete series and British biathlete championships. Seven members of the triathlon squad also returned from the West Midlands regional triathlon with medals after events in shooting, swimming and cross country.
QMC Girls Rugby Team In 2007 year the girls retained the South East Colleges trophy at a very exciting tournament with an outstanding performance against tougher opposition. Results started with a 19-0 defeat of Brockenhurst then an exciting 10-10 encounter against Peter Symonds in which either team could have won. Other results meant that QMC needed to beat Godalming by 24 points to win the tournament and did so in a great team display to win 27-0 and only beat Peter Symonds by a 3 point difference to retain the title. QMC included 4 County players plus 2 South of England representatives.
Costello School Year 10 Boys Football Team This school side had a great 2007 reaching the last 64 of the Under 14 Schools National Cup, ended the year in the Quarter Finals of the Under 15 County Cup and won the Basingstoke District Schools Power league football tournament.
Vyne Community School Year 10 Netball Team The School team enjoyed an unbeaten season, winning the Basingstoke District Schools Netball tournament to add to their league crown. To achieve the memorable double, the girls fought off strong tournament opposition from other local schools to cap the best ever year for a Vyne Netball team.
Basingstoke School Sport Partnership Kurling Team The team comprised of Students from Fort Hill, Brighton Hill and Bishop Challoner schools and had only two practice sessions before competing in the Parallel Games in Aldershot. All students have learning difficulties although in main stream education and would normally take part in sports competition. This team played very well together to become Parallel Games Kurling Champions 2007.
Dove House School Football Team The Dove House team won the Hampshire Special Schools League winning every game in their Northern league and then beating the winners of the Southern league to be crowned champions. The pupils were outstanding and had a range of ages playing to achieve a great success for the school.
Dove House Cricket Team The school became county champions for only the second time in their history by beating a Portsmouth team by 27 runs. This was a great performance from a young side who should continue to improve and are proud to be County Champions for 2007.
Bishopswood Girls Football Team The school Yr 5 & 6 girls football team had previously never played but after a school club now play both at school and for local clubs. The girls competed in 2007 in the Basingstoke & Deane School 7 A Side tournament finishing as Champions, were Hampshire finalists in the Flybe Community Cup playing at St Mary’s and then competed in the English schools Hampshire regional competition finishing in a creditable runner up position. Their dedication and commitment was outstanding throughout each event with staff at the school being extremely proud of their achievements.
St Mary’s Junior School Athletics Team This school Athletics Team train each week with some talented Athletes being identified. In 2007 a team of boys and girls entered in the Basingstoke Schools Indoor Multi events competition in their first event outside school with girls finishing 1st and Boys 3rd meaning they won overall. From that event 11 pupils represented Basingstoke at the Hampshire Mini Games at Aldershot against 14 town representative teams from all over Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. The team finished in a fantastic bronze position to end a great season.
St Mary’s Junior School Hockey Team In 2007 the school Hockey team has grown in size and ability training on a regular basis. They have entered the Basingstoke school league and won 98% of games played learning sportsmanship and skills as a close squad. The team look to continue development into 2008 with further success potentially ahead supported by a dedicated enthusiastic group of teachers behind the school sport development programme.
Burnham Copse Junior Girls Football Team The Girls team consists of year 5 and 6 schoolchildren who train at school. Girls have played in a number of tournaments and have also enjoyed success. The team represented the County at the Hampshire mini-games, were runners up at a Basingstoke county tournament, winners of a second similar tournament, winners of the BCOT tournament and got to the quarter final of the Flybe community cup at Brighton Hill.

Basingstoke Athletics Club Veteran Men’s Team This excellent Veteran men’s team last year remained unbeaten in the Hampshire and Surrey Veterans league, going on to finish 3rd in a close fought final in Ashford on a day which saw atrocious weather conditions but bright performances by those members of the team that had turned out throughout the season.
Basingstoke Athletics Club Ladies Team The ladies Southern League team were successful in gaining promotion to division 1 of the Southern Women’s athletics League, a great achievement when the team is compared to others that were substantially stronger on paper with larger numbers of athletes to choose from, never the less the ladies fought a hard battle and succeeded sometimes against all the odds.
Basingstoke Belles Gymnastics Team This local Gymnastic team were crowned British Veteran Champions in 2007. Their main competition came from Glasgow Ladies, but at the exciting final Basingstoke won through and were victorious. This small team of four train hard at Basingstoke Gymnastics Club alongside training youngsters who are all part of a very successful club.
Basingstoke Senior Men’s British Athletics League team The senior men’s team have after only two years in the National league been promoted to National division 2 which now places them in the top 24 men’s Track and Field Teams in the whole of the UK. This has been achieved in no small way to the commitment of athletes to compete for the benefit of the club such has been the development of team bonding and belonging for what is often described as an individual sport. Despite several key athletes being away on national and international duties throughout the campaign the team has never let this affect the commitment and dedication to achieving the success which was planned from the start of the 2007 season. This success has not come easily to the club and has only been achieved because of the continued hard work motivation and dedication of the athletes coaches and club officials.
Basingstoke Town Ladies FC Now in their 15th season and in 2007 won two trophies (Hampshire Division 2 Championship and County Intermediate Cup) their first silverware ever ! They were also North Hampshire Women’s Cup finalists and Hampshire Invitation cup semi finalists. At year end they were top of Division 1 unbeaten in all competitions and have not been beaten in any league match since March 2006. The team is also involved in School / Club links, Return to Sport and have 7 players who have gained coaching qualifications.
Overton & Basingstoke Taekwondo Team Although Taekwondo is often an individual competitor sport there are occasions when results are added together as a team result. The Southern League Championship is run over three events during the year and involves all the disciplines of the sport. Clubs from across several counties compete with OBTKD wining this league in 2006. In 2007 the club team took gold medals in 14 of the 19 competitions entered and the team were proud to win the Southern league again.
R & B Sports Football Club Only formed in 2004 and in their first season in Division 1 they won the league without losing a game plus won the Basingstoke A Cup. They have had continued success and so far this season have yet to lose a game in the six competitions entered and are already through to the Quarter Finals of the Hampshire Cup, the North Hants Intermediate Cup, the Basingstoke A Cup, Peter Raynbird Cup and Basingstoke Senior Cup. They are top of the local Premier Division and hope to end the current season with a raft of honours.
Totally Tennis Coaching Team Totally Tennis in Basingstoke has the highest qualified coaching team in Hampshire with two LTA Performance Coaches (PCA’s), the highest qualification available to a coach, three Club Coaches (CCA’s) and one coach who has the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) qualification and is due to finish his LTA Development Coaches Award (DCA) at the end of February. In 2007 five of these coaches have successfully passed their next level qualifications. Totally Tennis celebrated in 2007 after the announcement that the club has become the first ‘Prince Plugged In’ (PPI) academy in the UK and only the fourth club in the whole of Europe which is a tribute to its team’s success.
The other two teams nominated but unfortunately not invited to the awards although congratulated on their efforts were – Storm Ice Skating Team and the Basingstoke Youth Rugby Coaching Team.
