GENERAL INFORMATION
Introduction
Linked to The Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM), the UK's Professional Association for Music Educators, Musicians, Conductors and Composers, The Winchester Music School offers high quality individual, and group music tuition, encompassing all aspects and styles.
Tuition includes:
* Tuition on a one-to-one basis * Ensemble activities, e.g. Modern Pop/Rock Bands; Jazz & Big Bands; Brass and Wind -- Bands; Micro Technology: Notator; Q Bass; Studio Recording Techniques & Facilities * Performing opportunities with regular concerts and events * Graded examinations as set by leading exam boards
In order to assist progress and to develop musical skills and understanding, pupils are encouraged to participate in as many appropriate activities as possible.
Who gives tuition ?
Tuition is given by highly qualified and experienced specialist teachers.
Where do lessons take place ?
Lessons are given at the Winchester Music School and in Schools. A minimum of thirty-three individual lessons are given in the average academic year, i.e. an average of eleven per term, or more as arranged.
How much does tuition cost ?
The cost of individual tuition will be £29 per hour, or part thereof. The cost of playing in an ensemble will be £7.50 per hour, or part thereof. A full tariff of fees is available. Fees are reviewed annually.
All individual tuition fees are payable half-termly in advance. Ensemble/band tuition is also payable in advance.
What is a music school ?
A music school is a place where pupils meet during the day, after school or on Saturdays to make music. Music Schools offer a wide range of activities including a structured progression of music and instrumental groups, ensembles, theory and general musicianship classes. They also offer regular opportunities to perform in concerts and festivals.
Consultations
Parents and pupils may arrange a consultation session to find out which musical instrument would best suit them. All musical instruments are available to try. Once a decision has been made, the teacher will advise whether to purchase an instrument in the "Try Before You Buy Schemes". In either instance, the teacher will advise on all aspects of the instrumental tuition, from music and accessories to repairs, whether they be minor or major.
Timetable
Individual instrumental lessons take place at the Music School each weekday from 9.00am. Ensembles, Bands, Theory and General Musicianship Classes take place as published by the Winchester Music School (please see specific times.)
Application forms for all the available ensembles and musical opportunities are available from the Winchester Music School or from Music teachers visiting schools and colleges.
Why learn a musical instrument ?
Musical instruments are used in many different kinds of music from orchestral, rock, pop, jazz, wind band, brass bands and ensembles.
Learning to play a musical instrument helps to develop more general skills including: - Confidence, Concentration, Creativity, Self-assessment and the ability to work and socialise with others.
On which instruments is tuition available ?
Tuition is available on the Oboe, Cor-Anglais, Flute, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Drums and Tuned Percussion, Cornet, Tenor Horn, Baritone, Euphonium, EEb & BBb Bass Tubas, Sousaphone and all background brasswinds and Keyboards, including Piano, Organ and Electric Keyboards.
Numerous guitars including Acoustic Guitar, Bass Guitar, Lead Guitar and other related pop/rock instruments. Tuition is also available on Classical guitar, Mandolin. World Musics, including Thai Pipet, Gamelan, Steel Pans, African and Indian Drums etc....instrumental and ensemble tuition available on request.
At which age is it best to start playing a specific musical instrument ?
There is no age limit, although much depends on the pupil's size. Brass and Woodwind Pupils need to have properly developed 'second' front teeth.
Here are some guidelines for Brass and Woodwind:
8/9 years old - Trumpet, Cornet, Flugelhorn, Tenorhorn, Baritone and Trombone, Flute, Clarinet and Alto Saxophone
10/11 years old - French Horn, Euphonium. Basses and Tubas. Tenor Sax, Bassoon and Oboe
Strings may be learnt from an early age.
Guidelines for...
Drum Kit: Any student from 7 years and upwards Percussion: Any student from 3 years and upward including Kindermusik (young persons' drama, music and dance) Guitars: Any student from 7 years and upward Keyboards: Any student from 4 years and upward Choirs: Any age
How long is the average music lesson ?
Individual lessons at the Music School last for a minimum of thirty minutes. Group lessons at the Music School in Schools and Colleges last from between forty minutes and two hours. In the early stages there are usually three or four pupils in a group. Larger Ensembles, i.e. Concert Band & Big Band might include upwards of forty students. Ensembles are also formed at students' request.
Where can instruments be obtained ?
Instruments can be bought or hired from local music shops, but it is recommended that the instrumental teacher is consulted beforehand. The Winchester Music School will assist in all aspects of purchase, repair and maintenance of all Musical Instruments. Electrical and other associated repairs are also available.
When can a pupil, or student, join a band or ensemble ?
Pupils, and students, are encouraged to join a band, pop group or ensemble within school or at the Music School as soon as they have developed some basic technical skills, application forms available from teachers. A termly Newsletter is available outlining rehearsal and concert schedules.
