PACT MEETING

You are invited to attend a public meeting that will shape problem solving and influence the way we police your Neighbourhood in the future.

Your opinions are important to us, please let us know what is important to you in your Neighbourhood.

The meeting will be held at 7pm on Monday the 11th of February 2008 at Hampton Park Church Hall

News in Brief

New Local Police Officer

PC Keith Ramone has been appointed as the Local Police Officer for Tupsley and Aylestone. He had been the local police officer on a temporary basis since September last year but is now in post permanently.

Crime Trends

Criminal damage

Before Christmas there was a series of criminal damage caused at the allotments off Hollywell Gutter Lane. There was damage to sheds and greenhouses as well as damage to tools and storage equipment. As a result of this six juveniles were issued with warning letters. Since then there have not been any further reports of damage at the allotments.

Burglaries

During the first weeks of January there were two burglaries in the Gorsty Lane area. These offences occurred during the daytime and entry was gained through patio doors at the rear of the properties. Residents are reminded that whilst uncommon burglaries do occur. The important thing is not to make it easy. Always ensure that your property is secure and that windows are locked.

Nuisance Parking

Anti-social parking around the colleges continues to be a problem. This issue was set as a Local Policing Priority at the last PACT meeting on the 27th of September last year. Since then the Local Policing Team (LPT) has been targeting vehicles which are causing a nuisance to residents. The major concern is safety. When vehicles are parked blocking footpaths it means that pedestrians have to go round often into the road. This is especially hazardous to the more vulnerable members of the community for instance people using mobility scooters and parents pushing prams etc. A common complaint from residents is that it is all the fault of the students. While the students must share in some of the blame there are also some residents who are parking in an anti-social manner.
The Royal National College for the Blind (RNCB) is also nearby and as a result there are a lot of visually impaired people using the area. Vehicles blocking footpaths can be a particular hazard for them.

Neighbourhood Watch

It is the intention of the Local Policing Team (LPT) to engage with the Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) co-ordinators. This is an area, which has been neglected recently. The LPT apologise to all the current NHW co-ordinators and we intend to keep them up to date regularly with information relevant to their areas.

Postal Scam

This information is to warn you, and is not intended to worry you or cause alarm.

This happens when someone puts a card through a householder’s letterbox that advises that it has not been possible to deliver a parcel.

The householder is invited to call a telephone number that starts with 090 to arrange for delivery of the item. This phone number is actually a premium rate number that is very expensive to call and at the end of the day, there is no parcel.

Our advice, in conjunction with Trading Standards ‘Scambusters Team’ is not to phone any premium rate number. If any postal item is undeliverable, either letters or parcels, the carrier will notify you with a card through the door. This card should have a local telephone number and address from which to collect the item.

Beware of all numbers that start with 090 – they may be part of a scam and will cost you dear.

Yellow Pages Delivery

Operations Director of Link Direct has advised us that Yellow Pages will be delivering during January 2008.
All bona fide distributors will be carrying identification cards and the delivery should be made by handing the directory straight to the householder. Where this is not possible, the directory will be left with a neighbour or custodian of a building or hidden out of sight. A note will be posted through the letterbox to advise the householder of the directory’s whereabouts.

Reporting of crime and anti-social behaviour

It is important that residents report crimes and anti-social behaviour. Even though it might seem a minor matter it is important that the police know about what is going on in your areas. If incidents are reported then the Local Policing Team (LPT) will be able to target patrols accordingly to deter and disrupt offenders before they become a problem. It is also important that incidents are reported straight away so if necessary the appropriate resources can be allocated in a timely manner.

Happy New Year

Finally, the Local Policing Team (LPT) would like to say happy new year to all the residents of the Tupsley and Aylestone area.
Contact numbers and e-mails for the LPT are at the end of the newsletter.
If anyone has any questions or information then please get in touch.
