What number do I use to contact the police?

Many people have said they are confused by the variety of phone numbers that they can use to contact the police and what number should they use. In the hope of clearing up any confusion the following may be of some help.

In an emergency use 999
However, please do not use this numver unless it is an emergency as this clogs up the system and may stop a real emergency getting through. Use 999 following a road collision, if there is an intruder on the premises or any other reason where you need an immediate police response.

The number
08457 444888 can be used for any reason and is the important one to have to hand. This will connect you to the nearest divisional police station. For example, if you phoned from the Bromyard area it would connect you to the police station at Hereford who would then deal with your problem of, if necessary, transfer you call to whoever you needed to speak to.

If you need to contact your local Beat Officer then you may use their mobile phone numbers. These are usually used for advice on matters important to the caller or for passing on items of information. It is not a good idea to use these phones to report crime as the Beat Officer may be on rest day or annual leave and therefore may not answer the phone or pick up his messages that day.

Similarly, the mobile phone number for the Community Support Officer may be used for advice on problems such as trouble with neighbours, to pass on information etc.

The Crimestoppers telephone number
0800 555 111 is a confidential line for passing on information relating to a crime where you do not necessarily want to give your name of get involved, but may wish for a reward.
