 | The Quadrangular Tournament at Chirk G.C.
The Quadrangular Tournament involving juniors from Borth, Kington, Patshull Park and the host club got off to a good start on Saturday May 19 2001.
After a traumatic journey the Junior Organiser, his passengers, and the following car, eventually arrived after an error by the navigator, involving a detour of some extra thirty odd miles!
Chirk is a very long (7045 yards off the whites, 6541 off the yellows) and quite difficult par 72 course. It boasts a par five which at 659 yards is one of the longest in Europe. Fortunately the boys played off the yellows but the 17th was still a daunting 621 yards.
Kington, with a young and very inexperienced side, acquitted themselves well and finished second to Patshull. The scores were 198 Patshull, 192 Kington, 187 Borth and 186 Chirk. Ben Hughes, making his debut, was Kington’s best player, scoring a very creditable 34 points.
The general feeling among the team was that the highlight of the golf was the awesome 17th. Other outstanding memories were of the overpowering smell of chocolate from a nearby factory and the number of mallards nesting on the balcony in the flower tubs, totally oblivious to all the hubbub and bodies all around.
Kington were a well-turned out team and captain Peter Handley rounded off a splendid day with a good maiden speech.
Afterwards most of the team expressed the opinion that Kington should, like the other teams, have team shirts.
Finally it must be added that the Kington Junior Organisers defeated Patshull Park Organisers 2 and 1, with Ieuan Griffiths parring the 17th (yes, the 621 yard 17th) with a shot. He may not be able to navigate but he's certainly a mean golfer off seventeen handicap!
