Astronomy
 | Thursday 7 April 1870 A friend, has a wonderful astronomy programme on his computer called 'Redshift 4'. With it he can go back years to see where the moon and stars were in the sky at any particular time. Having read the section from Kilvert's diary, namely 7 April 1870, where Kilvert talks of the crescent moon, my friend was able to see it on his computer. He sees the stars and moon mapped out exactly as Kilvert would have seen them. Thursday 7 April 1870. '...When I looked out between 11 and 12 before going to bed I saw one of the magnificent sights of the world, the crescent moon setting. When down the stormy crescent goes A light before me me swims, Between the dark stems the forest glows, I hear the noise of hymns. And the crescent moon was sinking low over the dingle behind the poplars.

The Old Soldier's Cottage.
| Kilvert often records his visits to the old soldier and the conversations he had with him about the Napolionic war. All that remains of the cottage is the tall chimney end, now covered by creeper. The view from where the cottage once stood is stunning. | |
