Hereford LIFE Group Celebrates 21 Years

Braving the inclement weather on the night of September 25, approximately 70 people, including the Mayor of Hereford, showed up for the 21st anniversary celebration of the Hereford LIFE Group. The Assembly Room of the Town Hall featured display booths illustrating the various aspects of the group’s work, including free pregnancy testing, confidential counselling, practical assistance for pregnant women, and school talks.

When the programme began, local chairman Jim Meenaghan gave a brief overview of their history. He outlined LIFE’s non-confrontational approach and described how the behaviour pro-abortion hecklers at the first Hereford LIFE open meeting helped convince him to become involved. Former chairwoman and current education officer Elisabeth Hughes also spoke. A former client of the local group had hoped to speak but was called away by a family emergency. She sent a letter, which was read by a member of the group.

The featured speaker for the evening was Peter Garrett, research director of LIFE UK and founder of the Movement Against the Cloning of Humans (MATCH). Mr Garrett is a expert on human cloning, who has appeared frequently on many television and radio news and current events programmes. His talk, entitled “End Game: The Death of Natural Procreation,” outlined the current trends in the development and use of human cloning technology. He also discussed the implications of the Donaldson Report and the Government’s increasing endorsement of human cloning.

Following the programme, a toast was offered by the Mayor of Hereford, Councillor Richard Thomas. He said, “A group such as this, offering a valuable service to the community and run entirely by volunteers for 21 years, should be commended.”
