HFYFC Team wins Tug of War Final Again

PR04-29 HFYFC TEAM WINS TUG OF WAR FINALNFYFC, 05/07/2004
HEREFORDSHIRE TEAM WINS NFYFC’S NATIONAL TUG OF WAR FINAL
Herefordshire Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs’ (FYFC’s) ladies’ tug of war team won its second successive National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs (NFYFC) title yesterday in a spectacular Grand Ring final at the Royal Show, Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire.
The Barclays-sponsored competition saw the Herefordshire team compete in a series of preliminary rounds against teams from across England and Wales before securing its place in the final against Leicestershire and Rutland FYFC’s ladies’ team.
Herefordshire won the toss and chose the end. Leicestershire and Rutland’s team couldn’t hold the reigning champions who won the first ‘end’ pulled. The teams changed ends and this time Leicestershire and Rutland’s team was able to dig in and make a come back. With the score one-all, Herefordshire’s team won the second toss and chose the winning end, which proved an effective choice, securing the existing champions the national title for a second year.
Leicestershire and Rutland’s team was named runner-up, and third place went to Carmarthenshire FYFC’s team, which beat Lancashire FYFC in the play-off for third place.
Team members for the top three teams were as follows:
1. Herefordshire FYFC: Anna Lewis, Welsh Newton YFC; Christine Hope, Longtown YFC; Alison Ridgeway, Welsh Newton YFC; Hannah Brandeberry, Welsh Newton YFC; Karen Powell, Welsh Newton YFC; Sharon Watkins, Longtown YFC; Lizzie Stewart, Longtown YFC; Sally Bridge, Eardisley YFC. Coach: Brent Watkins.
2. Leicestershire and Rutland FYFC: Sarah Eggleston, Wymeswold YFC; Kelly Inman, Wymeswold YFC; Becky Mills, Wymeswold YFC; Louise Carr, Wymeswold YFC; Barbara Birkle, Wymeswold YFC; Judy Hatton, Melton Mowbray YFC; Louise James, Wymeswold YFC; Helen Meakin, Melton Mowbray YFC.
3. Carmarthenshire FYFC, all team members from Llangadog YFC: Helen Thomas, Indeg Williams, Enfys Williams, Mary Evans, Ruth Hughes, Gill Carpenter, Angharad Morgan, Meinir Davies. Coaches: Meirion and Glyn Thomas Ends

Editor’s Notes
In tug of war, when two teams compete, it is called an ‘end’ and three ends take place for each ‘pull’. The winner of the best of three ‘ends’ wins the ‘pull’.
