Aikido in Hertfordshire

Welcome to our aikido club
Our aikido club is located in North Hertfordshire, serving the towns of Stevenage, Hitchin, Letchworth, Baldock and Royston. We train on Wednesday evenings at 8pm at the John Henry Newman Leisure Centre, Hitchin Road, Stevenage. Our first class will be on 12th May.

Aikido is a powerful martial art that can only be used for self-defence. Angles and balance are used to over-power larger or stronger opponents. Since it does not rely on strength to be effective, it is suitable for men and women of differing ages and abilities.

We study a traditional style of aikido called Iwama Ryu. This is a style developed by the late Morihiro Saito Sensei 9th Dan, a long-term student of O'Sensei, the founder of aikido. It concentrates on the study of basic but powerful techniques and emphasises the use of aiki weapons (ken and jo).

Beginners

Beginners do not have to attend a special course if they want to start training straight away, but they should contact us before coming to the club. Beginners courses are run three or four times each year.

Each course consists of four classes. Each class starts at 8pm and finishes at 9.30pm. The classes take place in the Ancillary Hall of the John Henry Newman Leisure Centre, Hitchin Road, Stevenage (just off J8 A1M, near Lister Hospital).

For full course information, contact details and directions, please look at our website:

We hope to see you on the mat.
