How to join us!

We are very friendly group who perform 1 major show a year at the Palace Theatre, Watford We also put on a summer concert as well, usually in the Henderson Hall in Abbots Langley.

We have high standards and have recently won NODA awards for our chorus work and awards at the 2004 International G&S Festival held at the opera house in Buxton..

We rehearse Monday evenings at 7.45 p.m in the Methodist hall in Abbots Langley.

If you would like to join, please contact us at www.algss.org.uk and get in touch with the mebership secretary. otherwise, just turn up on any Monday evening - we would be pleased to see you!

If you have any queries or questions please email membership@algss.org.uk

Your chance to be a fairy!!

Following the success of both The Sorcerer and their sell out, summer concert, Abbots Langley Gilbert & Sullivan Society are returning to the Rudolph Steiner Theatre with Iolanthe (16-21 February 2004). Iolanthe is one of the best loved G&S operas and is a tale of fairies, the House of Lords and love!

We are having an open evening for new members on Monday 8th September at the Methodist hall in Abbots Langley. You don't have to have had any experience of the stage and you don't need a voice like Pavarotti or Lesley Garratt! We are just looking for enthusiasm and commitment (being able to sing in tune would be a distinct advantage though!).

The evening starts at 7.45 pm and you will have the chance to have a coffee and chat to members, as well as being able to join in with the singing. If you enjoy yourself (and we're sure you'll love it!), we can let you know about our informal auditioning process and give you a welcome pack which includes information about subscriptions and social events etc.

You can just turn up on the evening or contact our membership secretary, Philip Joslin, on 01494 43 74 00 or membership@algss.org.uk if you like to have a chat.

‘Top tenor hits the right notes’

Russell Stratton really has hit a rich vein of form since entering the topsy turvy world of Gilbert and Sullivan. Until a year ago, Russell was singing rock and blues with local bands. Since joining Abbots Langley Gilbert and Sullivan Society (ALGSS) for their award winning production of ‘The Sorcerer’ in February, Russell has had no end of success. His portrayal of Alexis in ‘The Sorcerer’ won him a coveted NODA scholarship to their national summer school in Ripon last month. Up against the best amateur talent in the UK, he got the lead role of Tony in ‘West Side Story’. Usually the lead parts are split between two performers, but his audition was so impressive that he was asked to play the role for all of the performances. Russell said, "It was one of the most tiring and rewarding weeks of my life, in four days of intensive rehearsals the entire ensemble, under expert direction, pooled their strengths and ironed out each others weaknesses to produce a performance none of us felt capable of when the week began. To work with such committed and talented people was an incredible honour"

On the back of his ‘West Side Story’ triumph, Russell has also secured the tenor lead in the ALGSS forthcoming production of ‘Iolanthe’ in February and will also be appearing in ‘South Pacific’ at the Watersmeet Theatre 14th - 18th
October. Russell can next be seen at Harrow Arts Centre 20th September playing the Padre in ‘Man of La Mancha’ where he and the cast from Watford Operatic are playing for one night only before they perform at the Waterford Light Opera Festival in Ireland later this month.

Despite being in demand as one of the leading young tenors in the area, Russell has his feet firmly on the ground saying, ‘"I am a person who loves to learn and am grateful that people see me as someone they want to offer these opportunities to. I owe it to them and myself to make sure none of this knowledge is wasted and I become the best performer I can be"
