Statement issued by the Association

The LDWA is an association of people with the common interest of walking long and ultra long distances in rural, mountainous or moorland areas. The LDWA promotes organized challenge walks, pioneers new walking routes and publishes information on all aspects of non-competitive walking. The Association is recognized by the Sports Council as the governing body for the activity of long distance walking.

What does the LDWA do?

The LDWA caters for many kinds of walking, from the highly organized challenges to the most informal strolls. Sponsored walks and charity walks fall outside the scope of the Association although many members do participate in these types of events. Challenge walks are used by some groups and individuals to raise money for charity. The LDWA does not support racing or race walking.

We organize and publicise information on:

Challenge walks covering distances up to 100 miles. A challenge walk is an event in which the objective (usually a set distance) is to be achieved within a time limit.

Anytime challenge walks, which are walks over specified routes which may be attempted at any time.

Group walks organized by the Association’s local groups.

Walks over long distance footpaths and routes designated by the Association.

Kanters, which are map reading events organized by local groups.
