WHERE'S OUR FOOTBALL STADIUM
ARSENAL, CHELSEA, MAN UTD, SPURS ? de HAVILLAND, HATFIELD TOWN ? Are you a fan ? How often do you go ? Can you get tickets easily ? Can you afford it ? Have you been this season ? Did you use to go more often ? Do you still feel part of it ? REAL FANS GO TO MATCHES Would you like to watch your local team ? If the answer is "YES, If there were decent facilities......" Read on !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! About 25 Years ago the town of HATFIELD had a team playing in the METROPOLITAN league against Reserve sides from ARSENAL, SPURS, WEST HAM and WIMBLEDON at Stonecross Road. They had a stand, clubhouse, a decent team and put on some great matches in front of sizable crowds! But the ground was sold off for housing in 1980 and has never been replaced! Other local Senior sides such as HAWKER SIDDELEY DYNAMICS, MACMILLAN BLOEDEL and MOWLEMS all had decent pitches and clubhouses. MOWLEMS even had a Grandstand! But due to commercial development there are onlytwo senior sides left.......... and soon there could only be one! de HAVILLAND, currently playing in the Senior Division of the South Midlands League are about to lose their pitch and clubhouse at the end of the season and are struggling to find adequate alternative accommodation to maintain their Senior status. Six years ago, HATFIELD Town WON PROMOTION to the RYMANS league (where ST ALBANS, ENFIELD, HITCHIN and HENDON play), whilst playing their matches in another town (WGC!), but they had to fold due to an inability to raise income through the usual means of gate-money and via a clubhouse. A sad state of affairs don't you agree ? HATFIELD has a population of over 30,000, yet face the possibility of having just one Senior side in the Herts County League on a piece of parkland at Birchwood which is not even for their exclusive use and is certainly not spectator friendly! Local VILLAGES have far superior facilities than HATFIELD! And yet youth football is positively flourishing - but where will the youth of today end up playing their senior football? - certainly not in HATFIELD, when the likes of POTTERS BAR, COLNEY HEATH, LONDON COLNEY and STEVENAGE can offer them better facilities! And where does that leave you dear supporter? Wouldn't it be nice to watch your local side in modern ground with your family and friends? Wouldn't it be nice to watch your children progress to playing for HATFIELD's Senior Side in a modern satdium with a comfortable stand and a modern clubhouse where you could go for a half-time drink and bite to eat? To watch Youth Respresentative matches and Youth Cup Finals, Wouldn't it be nice to watch evening matches under floodlights and still get the kids to bed on time? Wouldn't it give you a wonderful feeling of being part of something? Let's create a community spirit! Let's help dignify the town of HATFIELD through football! Let's put some soul back into the TOWN! An excellent opportunity to build a football ground in HATFIELD exists right now! HATFIELD Town and de HAVILLAND are working together to apply for planning permission to fulfil this dream at ANGERLAND COMMON, just on the outskirts of the town at the southern end of Bishops Rise. The site was once the HOME of HATFIELD TOWN for THREE Years following their forced vacation of Stonecross Road. Although we expect resistance from various local authorities because they will be seen, despite cries of help over the years, to have neglected this rather important aspect of our community - we intend to give them the opportunity of demonstrating their commitment to the people of HATFIELD by their vociferous support for this project! In fact we have already written to 25 LOCAL COUNCILLORS explaining the dismal plight of local football and our proposals to rectify it - SEVEN WEEKS later we had received just THREE guarded responses! We must presume that they are obviously busy doing other good deeds rather than address such a major community-based development so woefully absent in the town for the past 20 YEARS! You may be interested to know that plans were once submitted and approved by our local authorities to build a substantial pavillion for 320 people which included a clubhouse, housing for a resident groundsman, 3 cricket pitches, an athletics track and car parking for 192 cars at the ANGERLAND site. They even costed it all up. In today's terms around £1.5 MILLION pounds! WHAT DID THE PEOPLE OF HATFIELD GET? One rather forlorn block of changing rooms and NO car park! But it is comforting to assume that the local authorities have been saving the above money on the community's behalf for all these years just waiting for the right community project to come along in order to spend it! Well now it's here! And at the same site that they earmarked all those years ago! If you really care about the TOWN of HATFIELD and its sporting community please write to your local councillor demonstrating your support for such a project or write to HATFIELD TOWN & DHFC, PO BOX 235 HATFIELD, HERTS, AL9 5BP or alternatively you can email them at football@hatfieldtown.org.uk. TOGETHER WE CAN DO IT. We thank you for your time in reading this and ask that you direct others to this cause. THANK YOU. |
