The Curtis Conservation Group
The Curtis Conservation Group runs the Mill End Wild Life Area.
Today, the small site at the junction of Fotherley Road and Springwell Avenue in Mill End near Rickmansworth is a flourishing wild life area. Trees and hedges give shelter to frogs, toads, field mice and slow worms. A fox has made his home under a tree root. Birds nest in the trees and more varieties of wild flowers are becoming established. Butterflies are on the increase.
Six years ago this site was a rubbish tip and an eyesore, but a group of local people with help and advice from Countryside Management Services was given permission to turn it into a wild flower meadow.
A team of local volunteers, cleared away rubbish, repaired fences and planted hedges all round the site. With generous donations from local people, Three Rivers District Council and other environmental organisations, shrubs and trees were added to encourage more bird life. The brambles, nettles and grassland margins are being managed to bring more species of butterflies.
Three Rivers District Council generously donated a seat so now the Mill End Community Wild Life Area is a very pleasant green amenity for all to enjoy. We welcome visitors to the site and can arrange to take small groups on a nature walk to explain the various habitats that have been created. | |
