JULY / AUGUST 2004 Newsletter
 | Monthly meetings are on the second Thursday and the fourth Tuesday of each month at 2pm in Our Lady’s Church Hall, 5 Park Road, Rickmansworth;
EDITORIAL As editor of the month I’ve had some fun juggling around with the format of the newsletter. George suggested we try out some new ideas (well I think that’s what he said!) so anyway that’s what I’ve done.
There is clearly a conflict in what can be expected of 2 sides of A3 if it is going to reflect what we’ve done, what we’re planning to do and still give some room for feedback from members. It’s a shame we don’t reflect more of the creative work done by members in art, photography, writing etc.
Apologies to anyone from whom I begged copy only to have been forced to leave it out! Bob Wallace

How to Grow Old My maternal grandmother had nine children who had survived, one who died in infancy, and many miscarriages. She used to relate how she met in Italy an elderly gentleman who was looking very sad. She inquired the cause of his melancholy and he said that he had just parted from his two grandchildren. “Good gracious,” she exclaimed, “I have seventy-two grandchildren, and if I were sad each time I parted from one of them, I should have a dismal existence!” “Madre natural,” he replied. But speaking as one of seventy-two, I prefer her recipe. After the age of eighty she found she had some difficulty in getting to sleep, so she habitually spent the hours from midnight to 3 am in reading popular science. I do not believe that she ever had time to notice that she was growing old. This, I think, is the proper recipe for remaining young. If you have wide and keen interests and activities in which you can still be effective, you will have no reason to think about the merely statistical fact of the number of years you have lived, still less of the probable brevity of your future. Bertrand Russell MONTHLY MEETINGS (2pm) Thurs 8 July Arthritis may not kill, but it can take away your life
