Burneside Heritage Group

The Burneside Heritage Group.

October 2004 saw the start of a thirty month period of research aimed at piecing together a part history, (mainly twentieth Century), of the Village of Burneside.

When completed the story will be presented through a variety of media including a public exhibition, booklets, computerised presentations and C.Ds. The projects progress will also be tracked through dedicated pages on the “Local Heritage Initiative”, (L.H.I.) and ”Communigate” websites and in three locally produced Newsletters. The first Newsletter was published in August ‘04 and the second issue is planned for September ’05.

The ad hoc Group was formed initially to catalogue the archive of material left by local resident Harry Palmer. Over the years Harry had put together a fascinating collection of press cuttings, photographs, notes and all manner of ephemera relating to the village. The Group were encouraged by County Senior Archivist Claire Hooson to apply to the L.H.I. for a grant to finance the work. The application was awarded a near maximum grant of £24,000.

In addition to the work on Harry Palmer’s archive, individuals within the Group will carry out further historical research in twelve distinct categories within the Burneside Parishes of Strickland Roger and Strickland Ketel; they are: Buildings, Church, General History, Bryce Institute, Land & Ownership, Miscellaneous, Notable people, Organisations, School, Sport, Transport and Youth.

A further major part of the work will involve a small group of people undertaking a detailed survey of the Trees within the Parishes. This survey falls within the “landscape” remit of the L.H.I. and its financing is included within the overall grant. The field work will take some two years with a further six to nine months to write up the findings and present them in a “guide booklet” format.

Today, in Spring 2005, work is well underway in all categories. Watch this site over the coming weeks for situation and progress reports.
