Kendal Concert Band
 | The Kendal Concert Band is a friendly musical group of wind instrumentalists drawn from the South Cumbria area. At present there are 34 members spanning a wide age range. Under the leadership of our Musical Director, Jim Quincey, the band enjoys playing an interesting and varied repertoire of music, enabling us to perform at church services, garden fetes and concert hall performances.
The band meets on a Monday night at the Community Music Centre, Appleby Rd, Kendal, between 7.00 and 10.00 pm. New members are always welcome and any interested wind instrumentalists or percussionists should contact either:
the conductor Jim Quincey (01539 722088) james-quincey@tiscali.co.uk
or
the secretary John Lowther 01539 721368. johnrlowther@jrlhome.com
History of the Band
The Kendal Concert Band was originally formed in 1964. It was initially called the Kendal Military Band, but it was felt that the name gave the impression of a uniformed marching band and so it was changed some 3 years later to the Kendal Concert Band. Over the years there have been a number of musical directors. The present conductor, Jim Quincey, like the founder Edward Lawton, is an ex military musician with service in Regimental bands and the Royal Military School of Music - Kneller Hall.
We share strong links with musical groups in Rinteln, Kendal's twin town in Germany. The band has made several enjoyable visits to Rinteln to partake in joint music making events and has hosted several successful return visits.
The Kendal Concert Band has a history of supporting local charity and fund raising events within the south Lakeland. |

Twinning Visit
The Band were invited to take part in the 2002 Altstadt Fest in Kendal's twin town of Rinteln in Germany.
The band have been twice before. On this occasion, due to some band personel being unavailable at this time it was decided that the band would be represented by a Brass Quintet consisting of Three Trumpets/Flugal horns Trombone and Tuba, with special arrangements of standard pieces, traditional and modern by members of the group. They were accompanied in Rinteln by the Kendal Boy's Brigade who performed their own brand of entertainment at the festival. This year's festival dwellt heavily on the 10th anniversary of the twinning and was supported by Rinteln's other twin town that of Slawno in Poland. IN August 2009 the band will again perform at the Altstdt fest. (see Rinteln 2009 item)

40th Anniversary Concert
 | The band was actually formed in 1964, so we are actually celebrating having COMPLETED forty years of music making in Kendal.
In June we said welcome to our old friends from York Concert Band for a weekend of music making with two concerts in Kendal.
The weekend started on friday evening with general gathering at the Kendal Cricket Club. As it was a gloriously sunny evening (We have them all the time in Kendal!) both bands enjoyed a leisurly drink outside before sampling the delights of the sumptuous buffet supper inside. It was suggested that next time we bring cricket gear and make it an inter-county event out on the pitch. Some wag even suggested we have a game of 'musical cricket' with titles such as 'The Bowled Gendarmes'--'selection from the musical 'Crease', the theme from 'Batsman' , 'Willow weep for me', (That would be the 'score' only of course) On Saturday evening at the United Reformed Church the combined bands played before a large and appreciative audience with music ranging from Ra;lph Vaughan Williams to Duke Ellington and a very funny version on Leroy Anderson's Sandpaper Ballet-- which has to be seen to believed ! Unfortunately on Sunday afternoon, in the Brewery Arts Centre Gardens and just as the bands were about to perform, some very 'unusual' weather arrived and the bands recieved a bit of a soaking before being able to beat a retreat to shelter. So we bade a hasty and wet farewell to our York band friends with everyone looking forward to the next time
