Kendal Millennium Youth Choir
The Kendal Millennium Youth Choir first drew breath in September 2000 under the leadership of its present musical directors Linda Graves and Moira Hall. More affectionately known as "The Milli", its members are drawn from young people from 8-18 years of age in the Kendal and surrounding areas.
It is a non-competitive choir, whose aim is to promote music for children and young people. It offers an opportunity to sing and produce music both formally and informally through regular rehearsals and concerts, as well as local workshops and residential weekends.
Kendal Millennium Youth Choir meets every Tuesday during term time at St.Thomas' C.E.School, Kendal, from 5.30-7.30 p.m. and is taught a wide variety of songs from different ages and cultures, in unison and harmony. The repertoire aims to be as varied as possible, ranging from classical and traditional, to multi-cultural and modern. The singers are encouraged to take a very active part in the choir. They help to select material and conduct groups themselves. Many are talented enough to offer their own arrangements to the choir.
In recent years the Kendal Millennium Youth Choir has performed on behalf of numerous local charities and organizations including St.Oswald's Church, Burneside, NSPCC, South Lakes Alzheimers Society, Royal British Legion, Stramongate Methodist Church and the Cumbrian Federation of WIs.
Linda and Moira are ably assisted in running the choir by an enthusiastic group of parents, committee members and friends of the choir.
Linda taught at Stramongate and Old Hutton schools for many years and is currently head at Dean Barwick School, Witherslack. Moira formely taught music at Stramongate school, Kendal. They both serve on the organising committee of the Mary Wakefield Westmorland Festival and between them have been involved with Burneside Choral Society, Burneside Amateur Dramatics Society, Kendal Choral Society and Kendal Amateur Operatic Society.
Linda's daughter Anna has sung with the Choir since its' inception in 2000 and has helped Linda and Moira enormously with the Choir over the past few years. Anna is currently teaching at Holme Primary School.
If you are interested in joining the Kendal Millennium Youth Choir then please come along on a Tuesday to meet Linda, Moira and the other choir members or please telephone Linda on 01539 561565 or Moira on 01539 728002. We would be delighted to meet any young singer who feels that they have something to offer our developing youth choir.
In 2008/09 the Kendal Millennium Youth Choir has benefitted from generous financial support from the Westmorland Music Council, the Frieda Scott Charitable Trust and the Westmorland Arts Trust.
