Kendal Lawn Tennis Club

Kendal Lawn Tennis Club has undergone a number of transformations since its foundation way back in 1906. It is now a thriving and popular Club, offering facilities to players of all ages and abilities.

Originally located at the Kendal Cricket Club ground, it moved to its current location on Appleby Road in 1990. Set before the enchanting backdrop of Benson Knott, it would be hard to imagine a more picturesque environment in which to enjoy one of this country’s greatest sporting pastimes.

Now established with over 140 members, the Club offers a wide range of facilities for every type of player - from the total beginner to the aspiring Wimbledon first seed!

Members get together every Tuesday evening and Sunday afternoon - all the year round - for social tennis, while those able to play during the day are invited to join the Club’s more senior members on Tuesday and Friday afternoons.

Children of all ages - regardless of ability - are invited to come along on Saturday mornings (10.00 to 12 noon), when there is a chance to have fun in the company of other youngsters with a wide range of skills, under the supervision and guidance of two senior Club players.

The introduction of floodlighting in the autumn of 1999 has given rise to a new surge of interest in the Club. This wonderful facility now enables members to organise games, matches and training outside their working hours, without fear of having to pack up and leave when Lakeland’s traditional long evenings begin to draw in.

Tennis Coaching

Those who aspire to greater things may like to join one of the groups run by our L.T.A. Club coach, Jon Griffin. Since leaving a career in banking to take up full-time coaching, Jon has established such a wide following that he now has over 400 ‘clients’ - of all ages - on his books. The majority of his students are juniors, with 15 already achieving County-standard status and more on the way.

Jon is keen to stress that training - whatever the level - should also be enjoyable. Consequently, he offers facilities both on an individual and group basis for players of all ages and degrees of skill, with many relishing the lively ‘banter’ as much as the challenging prospect of trying to score an ace against him with a mighty first serve!

Kendal Lawn Tennis Club is not just about playing tennis. Visitors are assured of a warm welcome, excellent facilities and the opportunity to get to know people with a shared interest in having fun and staying healthy - all within a truly beautiful setting. Come along and see what we have to offer.
