Levens Choir started with a few friends meeting weekly in Levens village school to indulge their mutual passion for choral music. Since then it has gone from strength to strength under the guidance of its Musical Director Ian Jones to its present size of approximately 50 members.
The musical repertoire is extremely varied and includes music from 'Cats', grand works such as the Verdi Requiem, part-songs in 16-part harmony, and such triumphs as the Rachmaninov Vespers sung in Cartmel Priory and Kendal Parish Church, and the Bach, St. Matthew Passion in the URC, Kendal.
The choir particularly enjoys performing music by contemporary composers and has had recent success with works penned by local composers, some of whom are members of the Choir.
Levens Choir does not confine its activities to the local area. Two years out of three sees the choir packing its bags and boarding a coach to experience singing in exciting venues in other parts of the country. Past tours have included Scotland and the Borders, the Midlands and the Marches, memorably in Tewkesbury Abbey, Worcester Cathedral, York Minster and Stirling Castle.
Last year the Choir enjoyed a successful tour to Suffolk where we sang in Long Melford Church, Framlingham Church and Ely Cathedral.
