The Underbarrow and Bradleyfield Parish Council are seeking funding to refurbish the very popular four-way shelter on Scout Scar. The monument has been repaired many times over the years. It has fallen foul of the weather and vandals and is again in need of refurbishment.
After public consultation it was very evident that people wished to see it repaired in its present form. We aim to replace the existing roof with a spun stainless steel dome, which will be maintenance free and hopefully vandal proof, renew the panoramic map, repair the masonry work, repaint the steel structure and erect a plaque giving a brief history of the monument. The approximate cost of this is £6,700.
The Chairman and Clerk recorded an interview on Radio Cumbria to inform people of their intention. As a result of this a local paper gave front-page coverage appealing for help with funding. The public responded magnificently. Their donations together with grants from various sources means our Scout Scar Monument Fund stands at £2,700 (February 2001). This is brilliant, but we still have a long way to go. If you feel you would like to help then Parish Clerk Jackie Richardson would be delighted to hear from you. Her address is:-

Any donations should be made payable to "Scout Scar monument fund" and would be gratefully received. Hopefully work will start in the Spring/Summer of this year and we look forward to restoring this much-loved viewpoint to its former glory.
