Ulverston Choral Society was founded in 1844 with the first public concert taking place on 15th August, 1844.
We are one of the oldest Socities in the area and in the original charter stated that the Society would present an annual Celebrity Concert in the Spring and other lighter events for own funds. Rehearsals took place all year round although the summer sessions were not well supported. In later years the usual format was a concert in November with works like 'Merrie England' or other items and later in the late 1960's amd early 70's concert versions of Gilbert & Sullivan operettas were given. In December is was customary to present Part 1 of the Messiah and some carols.
On many occasions the Society was joined by other Societies. Amongst those societies have been Barrow Choral Society, Barrow Madrigal Society,Grange & District Choral Society, Lancaster Choral society and more recently Windermere Choral Society. In 1990 the Society joined forces for the first time with Sedbergh School and together with St. Anne's Windermere and Kendal South Choir performed Dream of Gerontious at Kendal and on another occasion joined Sedbergh Choral Society and Sedbergh School to perform Belshazzar's Feast and Faure Requiem at both Kendal and Ripon Cathedral.
For approximately the last 50 years the Society has been led by only 6 Conductors and 4 accompanists. The current membership is around 60.
