    Interests submitted : Nov 2005

Alice Hartley b1818 married Henry Smith on 16 Dec 1844 at St Bartholomews, Colne. She already had 2 daughters Margaret Hartley b 1839 and Mary Ann b 1841.
Henry & Alice went on to have 4 sons - William 1845, James 1847, John 1848, Henry 1852. They lived in Lenches, Great Marsden.

Margaret (Alices daughter) had a son which she named Smith Hartley (13 Jan 1857), presumably after her step-father.
It is said that Margaret died soon after the birth, I haven't found her burial but she certainly seems to have disappeared.

Smith was brought up by his grandparents Henry & Alice and he was sole beneficiary in Henrys Will.

Alice died 24 March 1876 and Henry died 2 March 1890, both are buried in the churchyard of Winewall Inghamite church along with Henrys Uncle James Smith who died in 1846.

The sons of Henry Smith & Alice (nee Hartley)......
William Smith lived in Colne and was a weaver then a baker.
James Smith was a grocer living in John St, Colne, after his retirement his son Harry seems to have taken over the business.
Both James & William are buried in Nelson Cemetery.

John Smith lived next door to brother James in John St, Colne 1881 but had moved to Burnley by 1891, he was an overlooker.
Henry Smith was a baker and lived in Colne.

Henry & brother William married sisters Emma & Susannah Riley.
