The Modern Day Districts

The 1974 and subsequent local government changes were for the
purpose of local government only and have not altered the boundaries of the traditional counties of North West England, they still exist.

The area shown on the above map, which covers the 4 x East Lancashire Registration Districts, comprises the most part of the area which includes the current Administrative Districts of :

* Blackburn with Darwen

The map below shows the location within the North West Region of England

The Traditional County Boundary

The Real Lancashire
The map below shows the boundaries of the traditional County of Lancashire, and the full coast-line stretching from Furness in the North to the River Mersey in the South; and including those areas that, because of modern local government boundaries, are frequently described as part of South Cumbria, part of North Cheshire, Merseyside or Greater Manchester

1974 Administrative Boundary Changes

1974 : In the North, Ulverston District joins Westmorland and Cumberland to form the Administrative County of Cumbria.
Liverpool & South West Lancashire join part of North West Cheshire to form the Administrative County of Merseyside.
Manchester and South-east Lancashire towns join part of North East Cheshire to form the Administrative County of Greater Manchester.

A large area of West to North Yorkshire- joins Lancashire including the old Clitheroe District, to form most part of the modern-day Ribble Valley District.
