Greenfield FC - 2005-2006

The newly formed Greenfield F.C began their season with an away match versus another new team in the form of Beagle and Child FC. Greenfield were without a number of players due to other commitments including Tasker, Roberts, Bain, Appleton and pre-season signing Marcus Allanson. Gareth Martin took care of the goalkeeping duties due to a injury to regular number one John Burrows who was to be dogged by injury for the majority of matches at the start of the season. Captain Phil Burrows was not due to return until mid October, so the captain's armband was passed on to Tim Mulligan who led the line.

It was Mulligan who opened Greenfield's account in the St Helens Combination Division 2, with further strikes from Dan Smith, Stead and Schofield giving Greenfield a healthy 4-1 advantage at half time. Greenfield, largely due to a lack of substitutes in humid conditions managed to add a further goal via Rob Munro only for Beagle to pull another back.

Next up was the Cricketers Arms in the first midweek match of the season. Bain and Roberts came into the side along with debutant Allanson. Once again Mulligan was the first man on the score sheet as Greenfield took an early lead. But with approximately 60 minutes on the clock, a long range free kick was spilled by third choice keeper Dave Shields with the Cricketer’s striker tapping the ball into the empty net. With just 25 minutes to go and with the scores tied, manager Houghton decided to make a formation and personnel change with Dodds replacing fullback Munro. The formation was switched from 4-4-2 to 3-5-2 and 5 minutes later a cross from the left side was met by Stead at the back post to put Greenfield in front. Further strikes from Mulligan (his second) and substitute Dodds gave Greenfield a 4-1 victory.

Prescot Leisure Reserves were next up and once again Greenfield would have to contend with a depleted squad. However, they did welcome Tasker and Fitzhenry into the side for their first action of the season. Luck was not on Greenfield’s side as Prescot managed to claw their way back into the match on three occasions. A very harsh penalty had cancelled out a Fitzhenry strike, who was later to see a penalty effort of his own blaze wide. A first goal of the season from Allanson and a Dodds strike was not to be enough as an opportunist strike from all of 35 yards hit the Greenfield bar and was placed into the bottom corner of the goal with keeper Burrows all at sea.

After dropping points for the first time Greenfield required a big performance versus Clock Face Reserves and they got one. With only the unfit duo of Bayliss and Dodds on the bench, Greenfield battled hard for 90 minutes and got their reward. A Roberts corner was met by the head of manager Houghton who secured a 1-0 away victory.

Greenfield then welcomed an impressive looking Vegas side to Bishop Road, who had began their season with an impressive record and remained unbeaten. Two goals from Dodds, playing on the left side of a 4-5-1 formation, gave Greenfield the lead. But Vegas managed to hit back after Chadwick missed an interception that let in the Vegas striker for their first, with the forward cruelly denying Greenfield the three points with a decent finish past stand in keeper Martin.

Greenfield’s unbeaten start to the season continued as further games followed versus Care Trust away and New Street at home, with a 4-1 away win and a 2-2 draw. An Allanson double coming to Greenfield’s rescue in the match versus Care Trust and a spectacular strike from Stead saving a point versus New Street. This match best remembered for a bad injury to Allanson as he was taken from the field of play with a damaged base tendon, as well as a 4 inch tear on his gastrocnemius in his calf resulting in a lengthy lay-off.

Greenfield then travelled to play Wastlebridge Park whom were to see their 100% league record continue as a Greenfield side minus the injured Allanson, Burrows (John) and Smith (Dan) who was on the bench due to a leg injury. It was to be Greenfield’s heaviest defeat of the season 4-0.

Next up was Boilermakers F.C at Bishop Road. Greenfield started well and a strike from Fitzhenry gave them the lead. However, a neat turn from the Boilermaker’s striker got the better of Tasker and at half time the scores were level. Mulligan then put Greenfield ahead and a further strike by Fitzhenry whom was assisted by Mulligan put Greenfield 3-1 up. However, disaster was about to strike as some slightly erratic goalkeeping saw Burrows away from his goal and Boilermakers pulled one back. It was to be a frantic last few minutes which saw an unsavoury incident as Tasker left the field of play after being head butted by the opposing player. With less than a minute left to play a hopeful long ball was hoofed towards the Greenfield penalty area and a break down in communication saw Munro slide the ball past his own keeper and thus levelling the scores.

Greenfield then had a home match against Clock Face Reserves, a tough, well organised team who Greenfield had only managed to beat 1-0 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season. Matters where not helped as a already depleted side (10 players missing), was further hindered by the non-appearance of Allanson. But there was some good news in that Keith Dennett made his debut for the club in a advanced role upfront due to a striker shortage. Despite goals from Dodds and Bayliss, Greenfield went down 3-2 to a Clock Face side boosted by the inclusion of some first team players.

After a disappointing result last time out and with Wastlebridge, Vegas and Boilermakers seemingly out of distance at the top of the league Greenfield knew that they had some must win matches coming up.

They managed to get things back on track with a 3-1 away victory over Orange House FC restoring confidence in the side as Houghton and Phil Burrows (2) grabbed the goals. The final game before the Christmas period saw Greenfield travel to Common Road to play Boilermakers. It was to be an explosive encounter that possibly changed their season.

A Mark Tasker volley put Greenfield ahead at the break. Their opponents managed to pull level shortly after the break and both teams were reduced to ten men, with Dennett the man seeing red. The manager reshuffled and employed Bain as a second striker behind lone forward Roberts with a three man midfield in place. Greenfield’s superior fitness levels stood them in good stead as they pushed forward in search of a winning goal. With little over 10 minutes to go a Phil Burrows cross was put home by Bain, and Greenfield wrapped things up as Woods fired home giving Greenfield the three points.

Greenfield restarted after the Christmas period with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Engine F.C and followed that up with a 3-3 draw versus New Street. This match saw tempers flare as poor refereeing decisions affected both teams. In the final minutes the game was brought to an end as a melee broke out which saw 6 read cards handed out rather needlessly.

Greenfield were then dealt a major blow as Wastlebridge Park defeated them at Bishop Road with a 4-1 victory. Greenfield went behind due to a controversial penalty decision and an own goal, but did well to pull a goal back through skipper Burrows who returned to the side after missing the New Street draw. Despite being under constant pressure for the majority of the match Greenfield fell victim to chasing the game as a Wastlebridge counter attacked to good effect.

The league table showed a Greenfield side well down the pecking order in fifth place, but they then managed to go on a magnificent run of results as some important players returned from injury.

Comfortable league victories over Orange House, Cricketers and OCS F.C and a Tom Worrall Cup first round victory over Prescot Leisure Reserves saw a Greenfield side gain some much needed confidence. They started to look at the teams above them as serious promotion rivals instead of looking up to them in awe.

Greenfield then welcomed an impressive looking Care Trust side who, largely due to the performance of their star striker, saw them gain a 3-2 victory at Bishop Road. Greenfield put in a below par performance, one which their manager had not began to expect could happen again to his team. At 3-0 down Greenfield did rally and goals via Sproson and a Bayliss free kick saw Care Trust hanging on at the final whistle. Greenfield surely could now no longer catch Vegas or Boilermakers in the chase for second place. Or could they?

First there would be the small matter of a Tom Worrall Cup 2nd Round match up with unbeaten Wastlebridge Park at Bishop Road. Greenfield went one nil down, but then decided to take the game to Wastlebridge. Bayliss stepped up and made a name for himself as a set piece expert as his free kick was curled around the wall and into the goal via the post. Extra time could not separate the two teams, so it was down to penalties and a well deserved victory for Greenfield (7-6) saw them book a quarter final place in the Tom Worrall Cup.

Greenfield then travelled away to Division One outfit Carr Mill, in a very physical match that saw them complete a memorable 3-2 victory with goals coming from Mulligan (2) and Houghton.

Five league games remained and Greenfield would not lose another match this season.

A 6-2 victory over Prescot Leisure Reserves (Mulligan 3) and a 1-0 victory over OCS F.C were followed up by 5-1 and 2-1 victories over Carborundrum Eagles.

A 3-1 victory away at Divison One Champions and Cup favourites East Villa F.C saw Greenfield claim a Cup Final place in only their first season. A sensational performance from MOM Darren Smith and a brave team performance with goals from Dennett (2) and a Martin Bayliss wonder strike saw Greenfield advance.

Greenfield FC Versus Sidac Social Reserves FC in the final of the Tom Worrall Cup.

A Tom Worrall Cup started with a Sproson goal only seconds into the cup final. A defensive lapse then saw Divison One Sidac pull level. The match was to go to extra time and Greenfield had one hand on the cup as Dan Smith slid home to give them the lead. Sidac did not give in and spurred on by a big crowd they drew level and penalties would decide the winners of the cup - Greenfield F.C.

Only one match remained in the St Helens Combination Division 2. It was Vegas F.C and newly elected Tom Worrall Cup Winners Greenfield FC.

Three different outcomes meant three different scenarios. Victory for Greenfield would see them leapfrog Boilermakers and claim second place and assure promotion. Vegas knew that a victory for them would see them claim second place, whilst Boilermakers were left hoping for the match to be drawn.

Greenfield were to take the lead through a Schofield strike, but Vegas hit back and with time running out Boilermakers believed that they had achieved second place. Manager Houghton knew it was all or nothing and decided to push himself into the attack alongside Schofield, Sproson and Allanson. With two minutes left on the clock a mazy Smith run saw him clearly upended in the box and Dennett was on hand to clinch Greenfield second place.

A truly magnificent first season was complete.
