Old Xaverians vs Greenfield F.C FIXTURE POSTPONED
Tuesday 5th September 2006 k.o 18:15
Greenfield F.C 3-1 Gerard Arms F.C (W) Greenfield’s season finally got under way against an experienced Gerard Arms side in a match that would be fiercely contested. Greenfield went into the game with a very strong squad missing only Mulligan, Barrigan and P Burrows, with Col Finch unfortunate not to make the Greenfield bench.
The game started off very scrappy, neither side allowed much time on the ball and an awkward pitch made things even more difficult. The away side were always looking to use their age and size advantage count. But Greenfield have proven time after time they can battle with the best of them and gave as good as they got which possibly startled their opponents.
Greenfield got the first and crucial goal after a long Dennett throw allowed Dan Smith to ghost in at the front post and glance a header into the far corner of the goal.
Following the goal the Gerard starting coming into the game a little bit more and won several set pieces in dangerous positions with the Greenfield defence standing firm. The away side also tried their luck from long range on numerous occasions but keeper Burrows dealt with each situation comfortably.
A second goal soon followed after Burrows gathered a well swung in cross and pumped a long ball down field to Daz Smith. He played some neat football with Dennett and the ball was released to Allanson who raced through on goal. After his initial effort was well saved he instinctively followed up for his first league goal of what hopefully will be many this season.
The half time interval arrived just as tempers started to flare and was the perfect chance for both sides to settle down. During the interval Daz Smith was replaced by Tasker, which saw Bayliss pushed up to left midfield and Gallagher switching to left back.
Greenfield started the second half the better of the two teams without creating any real goal scoring opportunities. But not long into the second period Burrows once again gathered a cross and quickly launched the ball to Allanson. He won another throw in a dangerous position and Dennett launched the ball into the box. Dan Smith was there to steer the ball goalwards, taking a deflection en route to warrant it as an own goal.
With Greenfield now three goals up they just had to keep their calm and not give away an silly goals. Houghton and Tasker marshalled the defence effectively with Gallagher and Stead providing terrific cover. Stead also found space to overlap Sproson which caused the ageing oppositions defence numerous problems.
Roberts replaced Shaw in central midfield alongside Dan Smith who had worked tirelessly all game. Towards the end of the game Allanson, Dennett and Smith all tried from long range without managing to severely test the keeper.
With five minutes remaining the referee harshly awarded a penalty against Stead for hand ball, although the offence seemed to be outside the penalty area. The penalty was well dispatched offering the Gerard some faint hope.
Greenfield dug deep and closed out the remaining minutes by keeping possession and frustrating the opposition.
Full time and a thoroughly deserved three points for Greenfield as they continued were they left off last season. Fine performances came from Gallagher and Houghton at the back, Stead put in an efficient first game at right back and Allanson and Smith (Dan) took their goals well. MOM however went to keeper John Burrows for his confident and reassuring display as well as having a hand in the build up to both goals.

Gerard Arms F.C 2-1 Greenfield F.C (L) Greenfield travelled to face the Gerard Arms after only playing them a fortnight ago. Both teams for several reasons were severely depleted but you still felt Greenfield would have enough quality to see off their local rivals.
With several key players missing, the versatile Chris Duffy slotted in at right back with the returning Phil Burrows making his first start of the season along side Ian Shaw at the heart of the midfield.
The match started slowly with neither side creating any clear attacking opportunities on a bobbly, uneven pitch. The blustery conditions also making things some what more difficult for both sides.
However, the away side did take the lead when a long and direct Dennett throw was flicked on by Burrows. His header somehow managed to land at the feet of Daz Smith who drilled in a well taken effort, that got a slight nick off the defender.
Shortly afterwards the Gerard were awarded a dubious corner, which was swung in well. This resulted in the Gerard’s equaliser after slack marking allowed the hard working number nine a free header which he put away.
Greenfield then upped the tempo and Allanson brought a good save from the keeper and also his well taken volley just crept wide. Shaw and Dennett also had half chances but both saw their efforts go just wide.
Not long before half time the home side were awarded a free kick just inside the opposing half. The cross, aided by the wind, managed to evade goalkeeper Burrows and looped over his head to make it 2-1. The Greenfield number one will be somewhat disappointed he couldnt get a hand to the ball.
In the second half a frustrated Greenfield dominated possession but could not penetrate the opposition’s resolute defence.
Tasker saw red for a moment of madness which resulted in a Gerard player also being given his marching orders. This meant Greenfield played with just two at the back with the impressive Duffy floating between defence and midfield.
Smith, Shaw, Bayliss, Allanson and Roberts all had further efforts on goal without managing to trouble the oppositions goalkeeper. The Gerard also nearly stretched their advantage but keeper Burrows attoned for his early mistake and made an excellent save from close range. In the final minutes Greenfield continued to throw men forward but once again came up short. MOM was Chris Duffy for an effective, hard working performance in his first outing at right back as well doing a tremendous job when Greenfield went down to 10 men.

Rainford NE Res 4-2 Greenfield F.C (L) Greenfield travelled to Rainfords NE’s alternative pitch with a strong squad, Roberts starting on the right of midfield with Sproson occupying the left. Dennett dropped back into his preferred role in the centre of midfield with Shaw partnering Allanson upfront.
Greenfield started the better of the two sides and created chances without any being too clear cut. Although it was the home side who took the lead when a hopeful ball over the top was not dealt with by the defence and the striker calmly slotted home.
Soon after Rainford NE doubled their lead when a neat passage of play saw them shift the ball from left to right and the unmarked winger produced a neat finish into the side of the goal giving J Burrows little chance.
The away side started to create half chances, Shaw fired over from a tight angle and Sproson also came close with a lob after a deft through ball from Houghton played him in. Strong running from Sproson won Greenfield a penalty when he was brought down in the area. Dennett stepped up and unfortunately saw a weak effort saved by the keeper.
Greenfield continued to push and Allanson, P Burrows and Shaw all tried their luck once more to no avail.
Greenfield started the second half a lot more positively and nearly scored within the opening minute after a great team move. They did however get their reward when a Bayliss corner caused havoc in the box, Dennett, Houghton and Burrows all scrambled for the ball but Shaw got the final touch. It was 2-1 and game on.
As the away side continued to press forward this left them open to counter attacks. After several failed attempts to clear the ball the opposition number eight turned his defender and unleashed an unstoppable left footed finish into the top corner. Rainford then added a fourth courtesy of J Burrows, as a routine back pass from P Burrows saw the keeper slice the clearance goalwards for the pursuing attacker to score with ease.
Despite being three goals in arrears Greenfield still carried on pushing forward looking to gain some pride and dignity. Shortly after, Shaw grabbed his second from the penalty spot after substitute Daz Smith had earned a second penalty with some direct running.
The 4-2 defeat leaves Greenfield at the wrong end of the table, six points adrift of their closest rivals who have all started the season very positively. MOM was Ian Shaw for his constant effort, his first two goals of the season and for leading the team from the front despite the result.

Penlake Seniors Res 1-2 Greenfield F.C (W) This week Greenfield faced Penlake Reserves away from home in the first round of the Hospital Cup. A bright start for Greenfield saw them getting stuck in early doors against the youthful, energetic Penlake boys.
Early half chances fell to Daz Smith and Shaw but they were unable to convert. But the mounting pressure did start to tell and Bayliss ghosted past three defenders before slotting past the keeper giving Greenfield the lead. An early contender for goal of the season from the free kick specialist.
The goal gave the away side the confidence to build upon and within minutes nearly scored again but Roberts fired over with a difficult volley.
Greenfield did soon after double their advantage when the lively Smith won a corner which Roberts swung in. An excellent delivery eluded Penlake’s defence and found the goal off the defenders chest. Sproson also came close after good work from Shaw played him in and the young winger attempted a cheeky lob to the far post.
Just before half time a ball over the top managed to get through to the oppositions centre forward, however J Burrwows saved low down and some how, the on rushing striker missed the rebound from six yards out.
The second half got underway and a long kick from J Burrows played in Smith, but his volley forced the keeper into a save. The resulting corner narrowly headed wide by Gallagher.
Moments later having given away possession on the edge of their own area, Greenfield then failed to clear their lines and the attacker raced through and produced a well struck effort giving the Penlake side a life line.
The home side then really started to exert pressure on Greenfield’s defence but strong tackling from Houghton and Tasker aided by Gallagher and substitute Duffy kept Penlake at bay.
Having weathered the storm Greenfield started to create a few more chances. Smith chased a through ball and having bravely challenged for the ball saw the rebound fall to Shaw whose right footed chance was cleared off the line by more determined defending.
Minutes later and Bayliss played in Smith whose attempted lob beat the keeper but went just wide of the upright. Greenfield were now once again looking the stronger of the two sides.
Greenfield did manage to hang on for a hard fought 2-1 victory against a well schooled, determined Penlake side. Back to winning ways for the Bishop Road boys after two previous defeats.
MOM was awarded to Daz Smith for his all round impressive performance up front. Smith chased every ball, won countless headers and nearly scored on numerous occasions, as well as creating chances for others.

Boilermakers F.C 2-2 Greenfield F.C (D) Greenfield started the defence of their Tom Worrall Cup away at Common Road against a tough and determined Boilermakers side who where looking to upset the cup holders.
The game saw the return of Phil Burrows as caretaker manager in AJ Houghton’s absence, with Greenfield also missing Mulligan, Bain, Smart, Finch and Dan Smith.
The away side started very much the brighter of the two sides and produced some neat football getting the ball quickly to either wings, with Shaw and Allanson trying their luck early on.
After soaking up the early pressure, Boilers then started to come into the game. With the players on the flanks playing some good balls into the box that Tasker and the impressive Gallagher dealt with comfortably.
As the half went on Daz Smith continued to cause the opposing full back problems with his pace and trickery. After receiving a tremendous through ball from P Burrows, Smith then played in Shaw whose effort just cleared the crossbar.
Greenfield did take the lead though not long after, possibly against the run of play. Having won a corner, Roberts expertly whipped in a great ball which deceived the Boilermakers keeper who managed to palm the goal bound effort into the back of the net. Just what the defending champions needed.
The away side almost added to their lead when Allanson went close with a volley, as well as Gallagher hitting the outside of the post from six yards out.
The home side once again came forward and a neat through ball sprung the offside trap and produced a cool finish from the opposing number 14. But moments later, Greenfield were forced into making a change as Tasker’s groin was causing him some discomfort. On came Duffy into centre midfield with Burrows reverting to centre half.
With only minutes remaining in the first half, a great strike from the Boilers left winger hit the post and rebounded to the right sided winger who himself hit the post after good closing down from Bayliss. A big let off for the cup holders.
Just after half time the home side managed to take the lead. After J Burrows had produced a magnificent one on one stop, a long throw into the box was not dealt with which allowed the striker to poke home from two yards out.
Greenfield responded well and started to play some of their best football of the match. Once again good link up play between Bayliss and Smith set up Allanson. The striker saw his volley narrowly flash wide of the upright.
Sproson, Shaw and Smith all tried their luck but Greenfield couldn’t penetrate the stubborn Boilers defence. Greenfield did however get their reward when a great passage of play saw the ball land at Smith’s feet. The pacey winger once again skinned the full back and delivered a marvellous cross that Allanson powered into the bottom corner of the net with his head.
The game really was now starting to be played like a cup tie with tackles galore flying in and good chances being created at either end. The home side had three bookings for persistent fouling, with Roberts feeling the brunt forcing him off injured. Stead the man to replace him.
The last few minutes passed and with what seemed to be the last kick of the game, Greenfield were denied a free kick in a promising position for what seemed a blatant handball.
The game finished two apiece and in the end, a fair result. Both sides still have great hopes of going through to the semi finals of the prestigious Tom Worrall cup. MOM was awarded to the menacing Daz Smith, not only for his skill and work ethic, but for creating numerous chances for others.

Greenfield F.C 3-2 Oddfellows F.C (W) Greenfield’s cup exploits continued this week in the 2nd round of the Hospital cup against division two side Oddfellows. The home side would have to progress with a severely depleted squad missing Tasker, Danny Smith, Allanson, Finch, Bain, Duffy and Smart just to name a few. However, Houghton did resume his managerial responsibility as well as returning to the starting line up at centre half.
The home side started the brighter, showing the gap between the divisions straight away by looking to out play their inferior opposition. An early chance fell to Burrows who just headed wide, with Stead also seeing a glancing header narrowly miss the target.
But it was against the run of play when the away side struck first blood. A swift counter attack saw an effort from the edge of the box parried by J Burrows, with the ensuing forward on hand to shin home a lucky finish.
The boys from Bishop Raod didn’t let their heads drop and replied almost immediately. Daz Smith's good running won Greenfield a free kick in a dangerous position on the left. Bayliss whipped the ball across and Houghton managed to keep the ball in play, guiding the ball back across the goal mouth. The ball bounced and P Burrows was on hand to slide in the equaliser from six yards out.
The blue and white stripes were now firmly on top and creating some good opportunities. Sproson was put through on goal but saw his effort comfortably saved by the keeper and Smith trying his luck from range.
It didn't take long for Greenfield to take the lead when another Bayliss free kick was flicked on by Tasker and Stead coolly volleyed home a difficult chance from eight yards. The first of the season for the pocket sized winger.
The home side started the second half as brightly as they begun the first, with Bayliss nearly scoring a tremendous solo effort, his shot unfortunately straight at the goalkeeper. Another great cross from Smith was bravely cleared off the goal line when it looked like Stead might have added to his one goal tally.
Slightly against the run of play Oddfellows were given a life line. A ball over the top was not cleared by Houghton and left the striker with a one on one chance, which he lobbed over the bar. However, the referee awarded a penalty as keeper Burrows clattered into the attacker. The impressive number 7 dispatched the penalty after a fortunate bobble, levelling the scores at two goals apiece in this tight cup tie.
Not long afterwards Greenfield did manage to restore their advantage, this time from the penalty spot. Stead was shoved in the back in the area and up stepped skipper Ian Shaw to bury a precise effort in the bottom corner.
Despite a late rally Greenfield held on courtesy of some resolute defending from Houghton and Gallagher, one impressive block in particular from Houghton at the death.
Full time and another battling display from Greenfield F.C despite missing several key players. Next up Greenfield face Premier Division outfit Top Nogs FC in what should be an eagerly anticipated encounter against the quadruple winners from two seasons ago.
MOM was awarded to Kevin Stead for not only scoring a good goal, earning the team a penalty at a crucial time but for an all round hard working performance.

Greenfield F.C 2-2 Rainford NE Res (D) Greenfield FC returned to league action this week to face a Rainford North End side that last time out gave the blue and white stripes a footballing lesson.
On a wet and ridiculously windy day the football was always going to be difficult. Manager AJ Houghton opted for a 3-5-2 formation with Roberts playing in a holding midfield role, with Mulligan and Allanson partnering each other upfront for the first time this season.
The home side started the stronger of the two teams with chances falling to both the front men with some smart link up play. From a Bayliss corner both Bain and Gallagher were unfortunate not to have scored with their heads as Rainford somehow managed to keep them out.
Greenfield also had a blatant penalty appeal waved away when the defender appeared to 'punch' away Mulligan’s goal bound strike.
Not long afterwards the relentless Greenfield pressure resulted in a goal. Another Bayliss corner caused the Rainford goalkeeper problems and he punched the goal bound set piece straight into his own net. A just reward for the continued pressure. The conditions started to deteriorate even more making the play even more difficult.
Rainford NE drew level midway through the half when the home side failed to properly clear their lines from a corner. A ball was played back into the area, allowing the number nine to finish from six yards out with the defence having an excellent case for offside turned away.
Despite this set back Greenfield struck back straight from the restart as some good running from Bayliss saw Allanson’s shot deflected into the path of Mulligan. The lively forward being on hand to fire the ball into the top corner of the goal for his first league goal of the campaign.
Allanson himself nearly scored when a sublime ball from Bayliss found him unmarked but unfortunately his shot from the edge of the box just missed the outside of the post.
Greenfield kicked off the second half playing straight into the gale force conditions but once again started the period the brighter of the two sides. Some great individual play from Mulligan saw the awkward centre forward turn two defenders before unluckily firing at the well positioned goal keeper.
Rainford did however draw level, somewhat controversially. A corner into the box found Gallagher’s feet and as the centre half carried the ball out, was appeared to be fouled. Once again no joy for the defence with the referee failing to spot the infringement, allowing the Rainford striker to drill home and thus levelling the scores at 2-2.
As the game went on Rainford utilised the wind and looked to counter attack whenever possible. Sproson replaced Allanson and Tasker was brought on in midfield thus pushing Duffy out wide. Further chances falling to P. Burrows from range and Daz Smith. In the dying seconds the visitors nearly snatched the points but keeper J Burrows produced a fantastic point blank stop from a corner.
The match finished two a piece with both sides feeling they possibly did enough to warrant a victory. MOM was awarded to Andrew Bain for an excellent, controlled display playing on the right of a three man defence. Bain kept the ball on the floor and released Smith on numerous occasions with some clever passing.

Greenfield F.C 4-2 Coppull Celtic (W) This week Greenfield FC looked to extend their unbeaten run to five matches as they faced Coppull Celtic in the 2nd round of the Northern Cup.The starting line up saw Shaw replacing the injured Mulligan and Sproson in for Allanson who was given a rest for the first time this season.
Reminiscent of the Tom Worrall cup final Sproson nearly scored straight from the kick off. Burrows played a leovely ball to Smith on the right, who whipped in a great ball which Sproson headed wide of the goal. The striker then almost scored seconds later but once again his left footed effort finished just wide.
Reinstated skipper P Burrows then came close on two occasions as did Shaw with a one on one as Greenfield continued to dominate their Lancashire opponents. The Wigan outfit were playing into a difficult wind but still had no reply to the glorious one touch football Greenfield were producing.
Half-way through the first half a long Gallagher throw into the box found Smith at the back post. Smith rose like a fresh water salmon to power home a well taken header. Just deserves for twenty minutes of constant pressure.
The goal did somewhat kick a brief bit of life into the away side and not long afterwards they equalised when some sloppy defending allowed the gangly striker to turn in the box and fire straight through keeper J Burrows' legs.
Immediately afterwards Greenfield restored their one goal advantage. A free kick was awarded thirty yards from goal, up stepped Gallagher who hit the target and tha ball fortuitously managed to bobble over the helpless keeper. The score would stay 2-1 until half time, despite Greenfield having at least ten good goal scoring opportunities.
Unfortunately for the travelling Coppull side the wind dramatically died down in the second half meaning they would be receiving no assistance and the onslaught would recommence.
Greenfield poured forward once more. Burrows was unlucky with a volley six yards from goal, with Smith and Shaw also having efforts saved. The game started to become more heated with tackles flying around, mainly due to the away side’s frustration at being starved of the ball.
The blue and whites soon made it three when a Roberts free kick was fired straight at the Coppull keeper who couldn’t deal with the effort. He spilled the ball and Bayliss was on hand to nodd the ball home from six yards.
Midway through the second half Stead replaced Bayliss and Allanson was brought on for the energetic Sproson. Shaw was also taken off after a crippling tackle cut the Greenfield coach's match short.
The home side didn’t let up and went in search of more goals once again. Burrows and Smith once again came close and substitute Mulligan saw one of his efforts well saved by the keeper. A good cross in from Allanson found Smith who headed the ball onto his own knee and just wide of the target.
Greenfield’s pressure told and they soon added a fourth. Another beautifully executed Roberts corner was floated over to Gallagher unmarked at the back post to nod home his second of the match, accompanied by another assist for Roberts.
In the last minute of the game Coppull Celtic scored a consolation goal. A corner into the box caused chaos and after Stead failed to clear at the back post the Coppull centre half powered a header into the roof of the net.
Full time and a well deserved 4-2 victory with the score line possibly flattering the travelling Celtic outfit considering the chances the blue and whites created.
MOM was awarded to Gallagher for another competent display in the 3 man back line. As well as creating the first goal, Gallagher grabbed an impressive brace, just deserves for his tremendous endeavour.

Knowsley South Res 4-4 Greenfield F.C (D)
This week Greenfield FC travelled to face Knowsley South Reserves knowing they needed to win by at least two clear goals if they were to have any chance of progressing from the group stage in pursuit of defending their Tom Worrall trophy.
The squad was seriously hampered with key personnel such as Tasker, Smith, Finch and Smart all missing as well as Shaw dropping out at the 11th hour due to bad back pains. Greenfield’s cause was also hindered when Barrigan and Stead failed to turn up.
The away side scored within seconds of the kick off. Quick thinking from Mulligan played in Allanson who sharply turned before firing his left footed effort into the bottom right corner of the goal, giving the keeper no chance. A dream start for Greenfield.
The lead however didn’t last long and Knowsley South replied moments later. After a superb jinking run the number 12 broke into the box and produced a deft lob over keeper Burrows and thus levelling the scores.
Five minutes later and the home side took the lead when a free kick was awarded against Greenfield in their own half. The ball was put into the box and although Gallagher initially cleared the first effort, the ball was knocked back into the danger area. This allowed for the number 16 to bring the ball down and rifle home a volley from eight yards out.
Greenfield however didn’t allow their heads to drop. Good attempts from Duffy, Roberts and Burrows all followed. An excellent Roberts’s free kick was whipped into the box towards Mulligan who somehow, with his back to goal, managed to steer a superb header into the top corner and levelling the match at two apiece.
Just before half time Allanson cannoned an effort onto the cross bar that bounced onto the line but somehow managed to stay out.
In the second half Greenfield were by now playing the better football, looking to get the two goals which would see them advance from the group stage.
A neat passage of play down the left from Roberts and Bayliss played Smith into space out wide. The elusive wing man’s cross come shot fortuitously found the net lifting the blue and white’s confidence. Shortly after, Smith once again sprung the offside trap and raced through on goal. Although he had Mulligan in support he continued his run into the box and was felled by the chasing defender, who was lucky to stay on the field of play. Captain P Burrows stepped up and fired home an unstoppable penalty giving Greenfield a 4-2 lead.
By now the game was being played at a hectic pace with Greenfield needing to calm play down with few players realising the score line was sufficient enough to take them through to the knockout stages. Manager AJ Houghton was harshly booked for apparent dissent by stupidly kicking the ball away.
Knowsley South hadn’t given up hope and their own pacey wing man beat a few Greenfield defenders and put a cross reminiscent of Smith’s into the box which eluded keeper Burrows and found the top corner.
After a few heated challenges started to fly in Houghton was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence. The centre half bringing down the attacker after giving the ball away.
The ten men continued to battle bravely on a large pitch and a Roberts’s corner was headed goalwards and appeared to blatantly cross the line. The official this time not in a position to give the goal and play continued. To make matters worse the home side immediately went up the other end to score an equaliser. The striker was played through and seemed to be stood in an offside position but play was allowed to continue and the midfielder took his chance well and making the score four all.
Moments later and an excellent tackle from Gallagher prevented the centre forward from once again advancing through on goal. In the closing moments P Burrows played a great long ball to substitiute Sproson, who did well to keep the ball in play and then deliver a lovely cross for Allanson to narrowly volley wide.
Full time and despite not losing a match, Greenfield failed to progress from the tough group in the Tom Worrall cup. MOM was awarded to Lee Roberts for another excellent, rigid display in the holding role. Roberts broke up play well, retained possession as well as having a hand in one of the goals with a great set piece.

Greenfield F.C 3-4 Top Nogs F.C AET (L)
Greenfield faced a tough task against Top Nogs in the last 16 of the Hospital cup. A very tough fixture considering how well they are doing in the league above and not too mention a side who won all 4 trophies the previous season.
Greenfield reverted back to a 4-4-2 formation with Sproson in the starting line up on the right side of midfield with Stead replacing Barrigan at right back.
Both sides started well and had early chances. One Top Nogs effort in particular just whistling past John Burrows' far post. Greenfield replied and an excellent corner from Roberts was headed goalwards by a great Mulligan effort which somehow evaded the goal. With Allanson also coming close with a few half chances.
Greenfield started to give possession away rather cheaply and invited the away side to come at them and that they did. A superb ball over the top found the tricky number 9 in space and he produced a neat finish beyond J Burrows giving his side the lead. Which was no more than they deserved.
Greenfield managed to keep the away side at bay until half time and badly needed to get their act together. A productive half time talk made all the difference and saw a revitalised and much more organised Greenfield side begin the second half.
Greenfield mainly thanks to the impressive displays from the lively Daz Smith and captain P Burrows were firmly on top and soon equalised. A free kick from inside their own half from Houghton, found Mulligan in space. He did well tp bring the ball down and race through on goal. Despite the keeper getting his hands to the ball, the clinical finish drew the scores level.
Greenfield continued to be on top and managed to take the lead. Allanson fed Burrows who's weak left foot shot was poked home from six yards out by Smith, just what his performance deserved. 2-1 to the home side and all to play for.
With only ten minutes remaining a genuinely late timed tackle from Roberts resulted in a melee in the centre of the field. Greenfield were harshly reduced to ten men as goalkeeper John Burrows saw red for leaving his line. Top Nogs were lucky to only have the 2 players given their marching orders and both sides would play with ten and nine men respectively.
Manager AJ Houghton was given the gloves and gave a very commendable performance for the remainder of the match.
A fine defensive display saw Greenfield continue to hold out for the win, but with minutes remaining on the clock the opposing centre back was given too much space on the edge of the box. He produced a neat volley into the bottom corner, thus taking the game into extra time. A massive blow for the men in blue.
Space openend up all over the park as Greenfield continued to push for the winner. Top Nogs scored two goals on the break as fatigue had started to set in on the boggy pitch. P Burrows did manage to pull a goal back with thirty seconds remaining, when he managed to volley home from twelve yards out afer a goal mouth scramble.
In the dying moments Greenfield were unlucky not to score an equaliser as a Mulligan effort was saved by the face of the impressive keeper. Unfortunately it was not to be and Greenfield lost the game, knocking them out of their second cup competition in successive matches.
A very brave, determined team effort, especially in the second half from the home side. Mulligan, Smith and Gallagher all producing excellent performances as did Stead who played through the pain barrier in the last moments. Credit to Houghton as well for replacing J Burrows in goal.
MOM was however awarded to captain Phil Burrows for not only scoring a great goal but for covering every inch of grass in awful conditions. Burrows also tackled hard and epitomised what Greenfield need for 2007.
P Burrows was also named as Player of the month for December, just edging out Lee Roberts.

Junction F.C 1-6 Greenfield F.C (W) The first fixture of the '07 calendar year saw Greenfield travel to Parr Stocks playing fields to face a tough, experienced Junction outfit. The boys from Bishop Road looking to start the New Year on a high after the disappointments at the end of 2006.
Greenfield travelled with a very impressive squad, with manager AJ Houghton taking up an unfamiliar role on the touchline due to an ankle injury, so Smart replaced him at centre half. Duffy returned to the centre of midfield alongside skipper P Burrows and after a lengthy injury lay off Dan Smith was named in the 16.
The away side started the brighter with Allanson going close and Mulligan rattling the crossbar after a great turn on the edge of the box. Junction themselves nearly scored but for a good J Burrows save.
The muddy, bobbly conditions made life difficult for both sides, even more so for Greenfield who like to knock the ball around. But against the run of play the home side took the lead as Greenfield failed to clear, the ball fortuitously broke to the number 10 who produced a neat finish over Burrows.
The goal only spurred Greenfield into life and they replied immediately. The ball fell to Duffy who let fly with a shot from 25 yards which nestled firmly in the top corner, giving the keeper no chance. A goal of the season contender no doubt. An instant reply.
Greenfield were by now flowing with confidence and soon added a second. A long free kick from Smart found Mulligan who once again turned his marker before delightfully slotting home beyond the keeper.
With the Junction outfit tiring, Greenfield were rampant and creating chance after chance. Mulligan, P Burrows and Duffy all went close and Allanson saw a thunderous volley narrowly go wide.
The pressure continued and having won a corner Greenfield then added a third. Bayliss swung the ball over which was met by towering centre half Gallagher who bundled the ball over from six yards out. An impressive third of the season for the consistent defender.
Just before half time J Burrows produced a good save with his feet and some resolute defending from the back four kept a dejected Junction at bay.
During the half time interval AJ Houghton delivered a rousing team talk and Greenfield started the second period on fire, looking to record their biggest win of the season so far.
Allanson and Mulligan continued to combine well up front and were a handful for the increasingly labourious Junction defence, with some sublime football on display from the blue and whites.
Not long into the half and Greenfield put the game beyond Junction. A lovely through ball from Duffy found Sproson in space. He picked out Mulligan whose goal bound effort was cheekily tapped in by Daz Smith coming in from the back post.
Minutes later, another great through ball from Allanson played in Smith who raced towards goal and was again brought down, the referee pointing to the spot. With usual penalty taker Burrows being substituted, up stepped Allanson to fire home into the roof of the net.
More great play from Greenfield saw them add a sixth. Sproson linked up well with Allanson who from a wide area produced a magnificent pin point cross to the back post for Smith to volley home his second of the match.
By now the home sides head’s had well and truly dropped as they had been beaten by an impressive away performance.
There was however more misery piled onto them. Excellent work from the tricky Stead saw him somehow wrestle the ball away from the defender in the corner before advancing towards goal. In a moment of rage the defender outrageously lunged at Stead from behind and brought down the full back.
The penalty responsibility was handed to Smith as he looked to seal his hat-trick. Unfortunately the pacey winger saw his effort well saved by the opposing keeper.
Even more pleasing for the Greenfield manager was the fact that he could introduce Roberts, Shaw and Dan Smith into the action as they looked to get back to full fitness. There was still time on the clock for Sproson to race through on goal, but his effort sailed wide of the target.
The referee blew the final whistle resulting in a comprehensive 6-1 victory for Greenfield. Despite some excellent individual performances all over the park MOM was awarded to Allanson for his work rate, creative play and an outstanding assist.

Sidac Social F.C 1-1 Greenfield F.C (D) Greenfield returned to league action after two weekends without a game, revisiting Wheatsheaf Avenue, the hunting ground of their Tom Worrall cup heroics of last season. This week Greenfield faced Sidac’s first team in what was always going to be a tough encounter against a physical, gritty Sidac side still haunted by that cup final defeat.
Rob Ablewhite made his debut at centre half alongside Gallagher with recent acquisition John Harrison starting his first game for the blue and whites on the right side of a four man midfield. With Barrigan replacing Stead at right full back the only other change.
It was the home side who started the game the more positive and nearly scored with their first attack. The powerful number 9 skilfully lost his marker before beating a few Greenfield players. Unfortunately for him, his shot was screwed just wide of the post.
This lucky escape brought a positive response from the away side. Daz Smith saw an acrobatic volley just sail wide of the post and Mulligan brought a good save from the keeper. In between the goal mouth action Smart replaced Gallagher who took a nasty knock and appeared to have damaged his ankle ligaments. An early blow for the away side.
Allanson also saw a headed effort once again cleared off the line. Greenfield were by now in pretty much total control on what was a very difficult playing surface. A couple of close offside decisions from the referee prevented Mulligan, Allanson and Smith all being put through on goal on separate occasions.
Greenfield were mightily unlucky not to take the lead when an excellent Bayliss free kick beat the keeper but cannoned off the cross bar and fell to Allanson, who delightfully executed an over head kick which once again saw the ball smack the crossbar. Frustrating times all round.
But it wasn't long until skipper P Burrows received a throw in on the left side of the pitch. He managed to evade two defenders before cutting inside on to his right foot and from just outside the corner of the box, produced an unstoppable effort that dipped in under the bar giving the away side a deserved lead. Another goal of the season contender.
Greenfield would take their one goal advantage into the half time interval.
The second period was equally as frustrating as the first, with chances narrowly going begging with some more petty refereeing decisions slowing the game down. Harsh bookings for Burrows and Smart followed in quick succession.
Greenfield maybe allowed their annoyance with the match official to effect their concentration and conceded a goal from a corner. Some sloppy marking on the edge of the area allowed the unmarked winger the chance to drill home a well taken volley, through a crowd of players and thus levelling the scores.
Greenfield continued to push for a winner and nearly conceded themselves when a Bayliss corner was cleared and a quick counter attack from Sidac almost finished with a goal, the ball bouncing wide of the post.
Dan Smith and the returning Col Finch were both introduced into the midfield to try and break down the stubborn Sidac resistance, but to no avail.
Full time and after 90 minutes the score finished one apiece. Greenfield will feel very hard done by in not securing all three points with results elsewhere going their way.
Despite very impressive full debuts from Ablewhite and Harrison as well as the ever consistent Barrigan, MOM was awarded to captain Phil Burrows. Once again a massive engine at the centre of midfield, Burrows won countless tackles, broke up opposition play as well as scoring a wonderful goal.

Knowsley South Res F.C 0-4 Greenfield F.C (W) After last weeks disappointing result, Greenfield were looking for a massive performance against fellow promotion chasers Knowsley South. Manager AJ Houghton took an impressive squad to the Lord Derby playing fields.
Despite missing several injured players in the shape of Duffy, Bain and Gallagher, with skipper P Burrows also absent due to other commitments. This meant Daz Smith donning the captain’s armband for the day. Stead returned to his favoured role at right wing with Roberts and Dan Smith starting their first games together in well over a year at the centre of midfield.
The away side started very much the brighter of the two and nearly scored early on, firstly with Mulligan blazing just over and then the Smith’s trying their luck.
Greenfield did however take the lead with what was an excellent team goal. Burrows rolled the ball to Ablewhite, who then spread the ball wide to Bayliss who knocked a delightful 40 yard ball to Dan Smith’s feet. Smith then played a lovely one-two with Roberts before playing in Mulligan. The tall striker beat his defender before playing a precise reverse through ball to Allanson who from a very tight angle eighteen yards out, slammed the ball into the corner of the goal.
The blue and whites didn’t let up and continued to bombard the home sides defence. A second goal soon followed after another lovely passage of play, which saw the ball find Mulligan whose miss struck shot fell kindly for Allanson. He did well to poke home his second of the game from two yards out and Greenfield were now flying.
The home side did start to come into the game a little more mid-way through the half. The sturdy, well organised Greenfield defence kept the teenagers at bay as did Burrows who was forced into some routine saves.
Having weathered a bit of pressure Greenfield effectively wrapped the game up just before half time. Smart powerfully won the ball on the half way line and then played the ball to Ablewhite who swung in a lovely cross. Daz Smith again used his springy legs to somehow out jump the keeper and the ball found Mulligan, who scored with a very difficult headed effort.
Three nil at half time and the blue boys were by now cruising. Manager AJ Houghton made sure the side didn’t get complacent and decided not to make any changes.
Greenfield started the second half the more positive once again and some unfortunate offside decisions prevented Allanson being put through on goal. Mulligan also felt he should have had a penalty when the defender took him down with a tackle that should have seen the referee pointing to the spot.
Fifteen minutes into the half and a shocking collision saw Barrigan unable to continue with what was a nasty gash to the ankle. Harrison replaced the injured defender with the versatile Stead going to right full back.
After a lengthy break in play the match recommenced in pretty much the same fashion with the blue and whites constantly attacking the opposition. Another great move from Greenfield saw Harrison, Mulligan and Allanson all link up to play in Daz Smith. The little winger flew through the air but his header smacked into the keepers face, preventing the stand-in skipper from adding to his impressive tally this season.
Chris Peacock made his Greenfield debut replacing Mulligan and the hard working Dan Smith was replaced by Finch. The changes meant Harrison was pushed into central midfield alongside Roberts.
Not long after coming on Harrison scored his first Greenfield goal. Despite going close on two previous occasions Harrison picked the ball up thirty yards from goal and unleashed a lovely effort which left the keeper helpless and sailed into the roof of the net. Game well and truly over.
Greenfield closed the game out for a tremendous 4-0 victory which was no less than the visitors deserved. An all round impressive performance from every squad member with a tough no nonsense display from Dan Smith and two goal hero Allanson in particular.

Pilkington 'A' 4-2 Greenfield F.C (L) This week Greenfield made the short journey to Ruskin Drive to face St Helens Combination leaders Pilkington ‘A’.
With Pilks seven points clear at the top of the table and eleven points clear of Greenfield, the blue and whites needed an inspirational performance to gain the three points needed to reduce the deficit.
Due to an 11th hour illness to Mulligan, Ste Kelly was given his starting debut partnering Allanson upfront. Club manager AJ Houghton also named himself on the bench after several months out with a foot injury.
The away side stated the more positive of the two teams and not long into the game they took the lead. A long Rob Ablewhite goal kick cleared the whole Pilks defence which Daz Smith managed to latch onto. As the ball came down he drilled a wonderful left footed volley across the despairing keeper to open the scoring.
Greenfield were looking comfortable and had a very strong penalty appeal turned down when the Pilks keeper felled Ste Kelly, but the referee waved play on, a sign of things to come.
Shortly afterwards the away side nearly double their advantage after great work by Harrison and Stead created an opportunity for Kelly, who's miss struck shot fell to Allanson who saw his goal bound effort rebound off the inside of the post and then cleared.
Despite unwavering defending from Stead, Bayliss, Smart and the impressive Ablewhite, Pilkington’s soon equalised on the half hour. A mix up with a Greenfield throw allowed the left winger the chance to play the ball down the channel. He duly obliged and produced a neat cross for the striker to poke in from eight yards.
The away side however responded magnificently and the debutant Kelly got his first goal in Greenfield colours, after he himself had won a corner. Skipper P Burrows delivered a beautiful corner for Kelly to bundle the ball home from three yards out. Just what Greenfield deserved.
Just before half time keeper Burrows produced a decent save from an attacking free kick and P Burrows and Ablewhite both had long range efforts that they snatched at.
During the half time interval no changes were made and Greenfield knew they had to kill the league leaders off.
Shortly into the half the injured Kelly was replaced by another Greenfield debutant Brian McCarthy. Shortly after the home side won a corner after an initial good save from Burrows was cleared of the line by the alert Bayliss. Unfortunately the resulting corner saw Pilks awarded a penalty when McCarthy was adjudged to have brought down the number 10, with the ball seeming to have been going out of play. The resulting spot kick was tucked in the bottom corner and thus levelling the scores.
By now tempers were raging, matters not helped by some very contentious refereeing decisions in favour of the home side. Against the run of play Pilkington’s took the lead through a rather dubious goal. The ball was crossed in from the right hand touch line to the Pilks striker who guided a lovely header beyond J Burrows. With the defence arguing that the ball had gone over the whitewash for a throw.
Greenfield did manage to regroup and started to pressurise the Pilkington’s goal. Allanson, Daz Smith and Bayliss all tried their luck. Smith in particular having a good claim for a penalty when he was brought down in the box.
By now Pilks had weathered the storm and with the game in its final stages Daz smith was harshly shown a red card for a late challenge. No worse than the two he’d earlier been the recipient of.
With Greenfield looking for an equaliser they left themselves exposed at the back and a Pilks counter attack saw them wrap the game up with a fourth goal.
The Final whistle blew and a very flattering 4-2 victory for the league leaders who look to have all but secured the league championship.
P Burrows and Darren Smith put in excellent, hard working performances, as did Kelly who grabbed a goal on his first Greenfield start but MOM was awarded to Rob Ablewhite for a wonderfully executed assist and a solid defensive display.

Greenfield F.C 2-3 Eccleston Utd (L) After last weeks late collapse against the league leaders, Greenfield were looking to restore some local pride against a struggling Eccleston outfit.
Manager AJ Houghton’s options were severely stretched as they were missing goalkeeper Burrows, Tasker and the manager himself through suspension. Injuries to key personnel Barrigan, Duffy, Bain, Finch and Kelly would mean Roberts would start his first ever game at centre half.
The home side started well and nearly scored an early goal, as Ablewhite somehow headed wide with the goal gaping from McCarthy’s pin point free kick. With Eccleston themselves having headed wide when the opportunity looked easier to score.
Greenfield were by now starting to dominate their ex-premiership opponents and nearly took the lead. McCarthy hit the upright with a neat lob, Dan Smith shooting straight at the keeper, with both Mulligan and Allanson failing to test the opposition number one with tame efforts.
Greenfield were disappointed to enter the half time interval all square at nil a piece with them failing to really trouble the Eccleston defence.
Not long into the half and Greenfield took a deserved lead. Ablewhite was given too much time on the ball and produced a fantastic cross field ball to pick out a great Daz Smith run, who managed to out jump the Eccleston keeper and head into an empty net.
Instead of killing United off, Greenfield sat back and allowed the away side to equalise. A mix up at the back allowed the striker to tap home somewhat controversially as the player seemed to be stood in an offside position.
Not long after and the home side again took the lead as McCarthy played a great through ball to Allanson who precisely put Mulligan through on the goal. The tall centre forward kept his composure to slot the ball beyond the advancing keeper.
The game continued to become stretched and it wasn't long before the unthinkable happened, Eccleston equalised for a second time. A harsh free kick was awarded against Bayliss and the resulting set piece saw Eccleston's Styles rise well to bury his header and thus giving his side a lifeline against the run of play.
Eccleston’s keeper then produced two great saves from Daz Smith, although the pacey winger should have maybe squared the ball for Allanson to tap into an empty net.
Once again the home side rested on their laurels and fell behind conceding another sloppy goal from a free kick on the right. The final touch may have come off Ablewhite although the striker was waiting to tap home anyway.
Greenfield deflated by this goal continued to make a late push to salvage at least a point but to no avail. Greenfield felt they should have had an equaliser when after good link up play from Dan Smith and Burrows, allowed the latter to produce a great ball to the back post for Allanson to power a header home. With the effort looking to have crossed the line by a few feet the referee failed to allow the goal to stand and the away defence managed to scramble the ball away.
Full time and another defeat meaning Greenfield have suffered successive back to back defeats for only the second time in their illustrious history.
MOM was awarded to Roberts for a gritty, disciplined, resolute performance in his first appearance at centre half. Roberts took his midfield form into the defence and on a day of very lack lustre performances across the park Roberts can be more than proud of his efforts.

Boilermakers F.C 2-0 Greenfield F.C (L) After two straight defeats Greenfield faced a revitalised, hard working Boilermakers outfit, with the away side looking to put their poor run of form behind them. Houghton returned to the centre of defence after a long injury lay off and Kelly started his second game since he signed in the transfer window, with Allanson dropping to the bench. Gary Martin made his Greenfield return in goal due to Burrows’s suspension still being served.
Greenfield started the game very poorly and this would continue until half time. On a very poor and boggy pitch Greenfield failed to create any real chances. Daz Smith had a headed effort saved and Mulligan tried to square the ball to Kelly when through on goal.
The half ended with neither team in the driving seat as the home side also failed to test Martin in the Greenfield goal. As the second half whistle sounded, a defensive mix up allowed Boilermakers their first effort on target. The ball was given away cheaply at the back which allowed for the attacking winger to dispatch his effort across the keeper leaving him no chance and thus giving them the lead. A disastrous start for those in blue.
Shortly after and Boilermakers added a second, effectively killing off the game as Greenfield looked unable to score once never mind twice. As the ball broke on the halfway line, the right winger was once again allowed to run through on goal. Martin did well to parry the original effort but unfortunately the ball rebounded off the covering Stead and into the Greenfield goal.
Manager Houghton tried to shake things up with the introduction of Duffy, McCarthy and Allanson from the bench. But this was to no avail. Although Greenfield did attempt to make a go of things towards the end of the game, it was too little too late. Mulligan came close to scoring after after great play from Abelwhite. But it was not to be.
Final score two nil and Greenfield suffered their third consecutive defeat for the first time since the club was formed and on this form look relegation contenders.
On a brighter note Houghton will hope to welcome back keeper J. Burrows, Tasker and Dan Smith for the home game against Farnworth, as well as Duffy and Houghton looking closer to full fitness.
