GREENFIELD VICTORIOUS IN NORTHERN CUP FINAL.
Saturday May 26th saw local football club Greenfield FC create their own piece of history, as they became the first ever team from St Helens to win the Northern Cup in its twenty five year existence. They faced recently crowned division 1 champions and Tom Worrall cup winners Old Xaverians in Old Swan and against all odds, brought the trophy home. After trailing to an early goal Greenfield were thrown a lifeline when Xaverians were reduced to ten men just before the break. They then got the equaliser early in the second half with a well taken Duffy goal. Despite mounting pressure from the underdogs the scores remained level and the game was taken into extra time. Neither side could find the net in the additional thirty minutes and a penalty shoot out would decide the outcome. Just like last seasons Tom Worrall cup victory, Greenfield held their nerve and went on to win the shoot out 5-4 and thus win their second successive cup final. All the Greenfield players would like to thank everyone for their support, not just on the day, but throughout the whole season.
