TERRY CATERMOLE FINAL 2005 GRIFFIN FLYING AFTER CUP SUCCESS
Duke of Wellington 0 – 1 Griffin’s Head
By Simon Kerins
Griffin’s Head atoned for their defeat in last season’s Terry Cattermole Trophy final by beating Duke of Wellington 1-0 in this year’s renewal at Accrington Stanley FC. In a game of few chances, Robert Addison’s goal on the stroke of half-time ensured that the Huncoat side’s short journey home from the Interlink Express Stadium was a happy one.
This match was never going to be repeat of last year’s final, in which Waggon & Horses edged out Griffin’s Head in a five-goal thriller. That said, Griffin’s Head made a promising start and could have taken the lead after just ten minutes when Nolan headed wide from a right-wing Addison cross. The same player went close on the half-hour, seeing his effort from Davies’ cross deflected wide by a Duke of Wellington defender. Although the Great Harwood team were matching them physically, Griffin’s Head were dominating down their right side with the tricky Addison being backed up by the excellent right-back Strutz. The winning goal came in the dying moments of the first half, when Addison slotted home from close range after Duke of Wellington had failed to clear their lines.
The second half failed to produce many clear-cut chances, although Davies could have made the game safe for Griffin’s Head in the opening moments of the second half. Without really threatening, Duke of Wellington raised their game in the second period with the impressive Wade at the hub of their best moves. In the end, however, the evening belonged to Griffin’s Head and their man of the match Addison. The Terry Cattermole Trophy was presented to winning captain Ben Haworth by Mrs. Audrey Dewhurst, widow of the late League Secretary Harry Dewhurst.

TERRY CATERMOLE FINAL ACCRINGTON STANLEY 30 4 06 CROSS AXES 0V3 GRIFFINS HEAD GRIFFIN’S Head retained the Terry Cattermole Trophy thanks to three second half goals to sink a plucky and patched-up Cross Axes side. Goals from Adam Bracewell and John Haworth put Griffin’s Head in control before Ben Haworth provided the icing on the cake with a well-taken lobbed effort from the touchline. While Griffin made most of the early running, it was Cross Axes who should have taken the lead when Steve Forrest seized on a poor back pass from Chris Maudsley but lifted his shot just the wrong side of the post. At the other end, Haworth rose to meet Martin Parker’s free kick with a thumping header but the ball was cleared from inside the six yard box. The lively Rob Addison then played a lovely reverse pass to Sean Davis but Cross Axes keeper, Russell Whalley, was equal to the danger and cleared his lines. Davis then volleyed Griffin’s best chance of the half wide after being picked out by Parker’s deep cross. Griffin finally broke the deadlock 10 minutes in to the second half when attack minded full back, Adam Bracewell, went forward for a free kick and promptly swept the ball home from another Parker set piece. Addison showed his ability to unlock the defence when he threaded the ball through to Haworth but the substitute pushed his shot wide. But Cross Axes weren’t out of it and Dave Livesey fired a free kick over the bar before Aidy Prestige picked out Forrest who thrashed a shot across goal. But Griffin’s Head soon had the cushion of a two goal lead when Haworth fired in to the roof of the net from inside the area. Cross Axes threw on John Andrews and the young winger immediately lifted his side with some impressive runs down the flank. One move involving Dave Anwar and Andrews ended with Forrest firing just wide. It turned out to be Cross Axes last real chance as Griffin’s Head extended their lead in the closing stages when Rob Hanson’s quick throw found Haworth who lobbed the ball over the stranded Whalley from the tightest of angles.

Terry Cattermole Trophy Final: DOG & OTTER 1 - 2 GRIFFIN'S HEAD ACCRINGTON STANLEY 29TH APRIL 07
Griffin's Head came from behind at The Fraser Eagle Stadium to clinch the Terry Cattermole Trophy for the third successive year. The Huncoat side started the match as favourites, but found themselves behind in the twelfth minute when Dave Livesey finished confidently after the Griffin defence was caught out by a long ball. Without having many chances to increase their lead, Dog & Otter had much the better of the first half with Paul Demaine and Dave Anwar impressing in midfield. However, Griffin's Head raised the tempo after the interval with Sean Davies missing an early chance to bring the scores level. Davies, along with Rob Addison and Ben Haworth, was becoming increasingly involved as Griffin increased the pressure on the Great Harwood side's defence. Just seven minutes remained on the clock when, following a half-cleared corner, Chris Nolan drove home Griffin's equaliser from outside the penalty area. Just as extra-time was looking inevitable; Griffin clinched a last-gasp winner when substitute Ed O'Neill met a Davies cross with a powerful far-post header.
