Under 13's 2001-2002
After a traumatic time pre season when it looked like the side would have to fold, thankfully for the lads concerned everything was sorted out and a revamped side entered the Bolton Boys Federation in Section A of the Under 13's. |

HSM 3 Westhoughton Rangers 2
Newly formed Horwich took the lead in this tough match through a penalty awarded when Thomas Brandts was brought down in the penalty box. Luke Skelly calmly struck it to the left of the keeper to put Horwich 1 up. Horwich continued to pressurise the Westhoughton defence and their efforts were rewarded with a second from a well worked move involving James Cregan and Luke Skelly and finished off with a header from Robert McNeely. The second half was a different story. Westhoughton piled on the pressure causing Horwich to defend for most of the half. They pulled themselves back into the game from a well worked corner. Unfortunately, Horwich hadn't learnt their lesson and almost a mirror image goal brought it back to 2 all. This fortunately spurred Horwich into life. A couple of well worked moves, one from Michael Yates and a shot from Adam Shinners but it remained 2-2 until the last minute when Westhoughton failed to clear a free kick and in the scramble the ball broke to Michael Yates who hit it cleanly with the outside of his right foot to beat the keeper |
Wigan Junior Latics 6 HSM 2
This was always going to be a tough match for Horwich against a well organised Wigan team. the first quarter of an hour was very even with both teams competing well on a difficult pitch, however Wigan got a couple of breaks and went into a 2-0 lead. The Horwich lads lacked concentration when it mattered resulting in a 20 yard shot beating Christian Kleeli in the Horwich goal making the halftime score 3-0. Horwich needed to do better and they did, and finally with the pressure on the Wigan goal a scramble resulted in Michael Yates toe-poking the ball over the line. Horwich deserved the goal but unfortunately Wigan made it 4-1 although there was more than a suspicion of offside about their fourth. To their credit the Horwich lads battled well with Chris Barnard in defence, Jonathon Gurney creating on the right and Robert McNeely always the competitor spuring the team on. Then a great move and well taken finish from Jonathon pulled Horwich back into the game again. This was a very close 2nd half but Horwich gave away two goals in the last 5 minutes from careless mistakes giving a flattering 6-2 final score in favour of Wigan. |
Hindsford 6 HSM 1
Hindsford started very well in this game. The passing was very good and they created a few chances. The Horwich defence was well organised with Chris Barnard making some tremendous tackles and Terry Knapman very solid at the back. A mistake led to the first Hindsford goal. Horwich battled very well and managed to create a number of chances - Adam Shinners going close and Jonathon Gurney also having a decent attempt, until a free kick levelled it for Horwich and Luke Skelly hit what could be the goal of the season, a sweet 20 yard free kick into the top corner. Danny Voils was very creative in the Horwich midfield laying on some very good passes, however, the better organisation of the other team led to another 2 goals before half time. The second half started well for Horwich but the conditions of both the pitch and the weather made it difficult for Horwich as the wind was in their faces. Although they created a number of chances - Johnny again going close, they failed to score. With Hindsford applying the pressure it was inevitable that they were going to get more goals and they did. Christian Kleeli in the Horwich goal was outstanding and made many a good save. We will take heart from this performance. |
Jubilee Cup Round 1 - HSM 12 Hindley Juniors 3
The Horwich lads have been playing some good football at times this season but have been very inconsistent. However, it all came together for this clash. Two strikes from Thomas Brandts and a cracking shot by Robert McNeely gave Horwich the advantage, their passing and running off the ball was excellent, but the highlight of the 1st half was a well worked corner ending in T J volleying into the back of the net. At 4 nil Horwich deserved their half time lead. the 2nd half started as well as the 1st left off with Horwich creating spaces and all eleven lads playing well. The fifth goal was excellent with T J picking up the ball in midfield, noticing both Tom and Adam in offside positions he decided intelligently to dribble through the defence on a solo run before placing the ball to the left of the keeper. Hindley then fought back with 2 good goals and things for a while looked a bit difficult for Horwich. However, Adam Shinners got onto the end of through ball to make it 6-2. Jonathn Gurney had an excellent game on the right creating a number of chances. Luke Skelly on the other wing was equally menacing. Then the goals started to flow again. A header from TJ, an 8 yard strike from Lucas Harper, a stunning 25 yard shot by Luke from the left wing - not to mention another 3 excellent finishes from Adam, with Hindley's No 11 scoring a cheeky goal also. Final score 12-3. Good performance all round by Horwich. |
