About the Orphange Cup
In 1932 Blackburn Royal Infirmary was funded by voluntary subscriptions, as was the Orphanage. Sir John Rutherford Bart, a local business man, philanthropist and a trustee of the Orphange, donated the Cup to the Infirmary to be competed for by football teams from mills and workshops, within the Blackburn and District area and was known as the 'Infirmary Cup'.
The proceeds were to benefit the funds of the Blackburn Royal Infirmary. The competiton lapsed when this voluntary hospital was transferred to the State (NHS).
In 1951 the competition was revived and many of the original Committee with their secretary, Mr.T.Mayo, offered their services. The new title became The Blackburn Orphanage Cup Competition (mills & workshops).
Today the Competition is still known as 'The Blackburn Orphanage Cup Competition' and is sponsored by Farley's Solicitors and all proceeds are in aid of the 'Blackburn Child Care Society' (formerly Blackburn Orphanage).
The success of the Competition owes a great deal to the small group of dedicated people (past and present) who make up the Committee and of course the football teams, without who there would be no competition.
