Mission Statement - PRISM
"Any new electronic technology that emerges will inherently bring with it an element of danger. When that element of danger is imposed upon humans for the sake of profit, we will always strive to uphold human rights and remove the element".

About PRISM
Pendle Residents against Insensitive Siting of Masts (PRISM) are a local organisation striving to change the potentially dangerous technology imposed upon residents from Mobile Phone Base-station Masts. Based in Nelson Lancashire, as a resident's action group our main aim is to oppose the insensitive siting of phone masts by telecomms operators in the Borough of Pendle. Why we are campaigning for safe siting
Many eminent scientists througout the world continously maintain that the long-term effects of exposure to pulsed radiation as that emitted from phone masts may cause adverse health effects in humans. There is a lot of doubt about the safety of the mobile phone transmitters when they are placed close to where people (especially children) live and work.
The UK bases it's radiation exposure guidelines on the International Commission for Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) which only takes into account the 'heating effects' of the radiation with total disregard for the 'non-heating' (a-thermal) biological effects. It is these a-thermal effects which many scientists say may cause illnesses to people who are exposed long-term.
The UK Radiological Protection Board
Even the UK's own National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) states that current research is insufficient and that more research is needed...
"We conclude therefore, that it is not possible at present to say that exposure to RF radiation, even at levels below national guidelines, is totally without potential adverse health effects, and that the gaps in knowledge are sufficient to justify a precautionary approach".

After gathering evidence from the world-wide scientific community the NRPB also stated that the ICNIRP guidelines are insufficient.......
"There is now scientific evidence however that suggests that there may be biological effects occurring at exposures below these guidelines".

Technology outstrips research
The latest report from the NRPB (2005) also concludes that the technology is surpassing the research needed to confirm its safety...
"the widespread use of mobile phone technologies is still fairly recent and technologies are continuing to develop at a pace which is outstripping analyses of any potential impact on health"
Source: Sir William Stewart, Chairman, National Radiological Protection Board, the Stewart report 2005 _________________________What proof is there of harm from these masts? There is plenty of evidence that electro-magnetic fields such as those emitted by phone masts cause adverse health effects in humans.
Furthermore, it is not for the public to prove a technology is unsafe, it is for the government to prove that it is safe before allowing it to be imposed upon humans.
There is now a large and growing body of published scientific studies showing concern that increases in the growth of early cancers, and cataract problems experienced by mast riggers exposed to high intensity radiation, may also become apparent in people exposed to extremely low intensity radiation for very prolonged periods e.g. by living very close to a phone mast for months or years.
For many scientists now believe that there are also Non-thermal effects of microwave radiation, particularly when pulsed at low frequencies, close to those used by the brain itself (brainwaves).
Children are particularly at risk because of the larger absorption of microwaves by their heads, and the fact that the electrical activity of their brains is still developing. Because every human being is unique, however, each person may respond to radiation in a different way. Anyone who is prone to feelling ill when exposed to low-level electrical radiation is said to be 'electrosensitive'.
Remember, with a mobile phone you have the option to switch it off, but a phone mast is IMPOSED upon people without their consent and it is permanently switched on emitting radiation 24 hours a day all year round.
Don't let History Repeat Itself
This is not the first time scientists have have warned of dangers long before governments have taken action: lead in petrol, traffic pollution, asbestos, smoking, thalidomide, and, most recently, the chaos caused by failure to act quickly on BSE infected cattle. In these cases it has often taken years to prove exactly how these health problems have been caused.
So are we all guinea pigs in some global multi-billion pound commercial experiment? When the Times newspaper put this question to Dr Michael Clark, science spokesman for the NRPB, he replied: "In a way, yes we are".
