Jigsaw Pantry
The name Jigsaw was devised to suggest that people of all abilities and backgrouns could come and work together. In 1991, Jigsaw Pantry was set up in Clitheroe to create training and employment opportunities for people who have learning disabilities. This was done through the development of a community cafe in the Methodis Church Hall, and subsequently by a stall on Clitheroe Market.
The turn of the century saw the start of some significant changes for the project. A bakery was established at New Era in Accrington (2000), a cafe was opened at Haslingden Community Link with Ewood Day Centre (2001), and in March of the same year work began at Enfield Day Centre with the develpment of Branching Out woodwork project. By August of the same year Jigsaw Organically Minded Cafe and Shop had opened on Moor Lane in Clitheroe.
The development of Jigsaw Pantry has continued in 2002. Following Branching Out's incorporation into Prosperity Recyclig, Jigsaw Pantry concentrated on the catering and training aspects of its business. Tea at Tiffany's at Haworth Art Gallery opened and a number of prestigious local events were catered for. These included:
* The Lancashire Food Festival - where we ran both a stall and the event catering.
* Lancashire Bridal Fair - all catering requirements.
* International Women's Week - catering and education on healthy eating.
* A theatre dinner and an evening with Norman Price at Haslingden.
The growth of the project has been supported by an excellent staff team of 18 paid staff (3 of whom are seconded from Social Services and 6 ow whom are ex trainees), 44 trainees and 20 volunteers.
Our support and developement of trainees has continued with the introduction of Progress Files and AQA Awards. Our commitment to excellence n terms of quality service and products will be carried out by:
* Employing and traiing people with disabilities in an inclusive workforce, prooting social inclusion and economic independence.
* Keeping our pricing structure competitive
* Working towards all businesses becoming sustainable
* Providing excellent customer service
The cafe within Haslingden Commmunity Link has been renamed "Willow Cafe", and the re-naming ceremony was attended by local politicians and digitaries. It marked not only the success of the cafe but our expansion intor nursery meals and off site catering.
New Era's reputation for quality handmade breads and cakes has spread across East Lancashire, and has become the base for our off site catering business.
Organically Minded Jigsaw Pantry shop and cafe has recently been refurbished. Our good quality food can be eaten in or as a take out. Organic veg box schemes, products promoting healthy eating and foods for special diets complete our unique package of products on offer.
Teas at Tiffany's traditional style tearoom has flourished within Haworth Art Gallery, with its quality and suptuous food combined with some traditional Lancashire dishes. One of the key areas of developemtn for Jigsaw Pantry is the growth of the offsite catering element of the business. This will be implemented at all projects as we look at functions, seminars, business and social catering opportunities.
Organically minded Jigsaw Pantry shop will develop this further by launching a local delvivery service for their lunches and veg.box deliveries. They have also begun prduction of their own brand of preserves and chutneys. All Jigsaw Pantry's activity in 2002 confirms its position as one of East Lancashires best training and social enterprises.
