ACTIVITIES JUNE TO SEPTEMBER 2008
THESE EVENTS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Everyone interested in the park is welcome to take part. Please come along to share in these activities. We need more people to work together to maintain and improve the park so that it gains Green Flag status and remains a jewel for all our futures. HIMALAYAN BALSAM CLEARANCE
We are meeting at the Foyer as follows: Tuesday June 17th 1.30 pm - 3.30pm Monday June 23rd 10.30am - 12.30pm Monday June 30th 10.30am -12.30pm Monday July 7th 10.30am – 12.30pm Please come along and help the Friends of Towneley Park as we clear some of the Himalayan Balsam before it takes over any more large sections of the woodlands. Hopefully, people will be sufficiently motivated to want to continue the clearance of the Himalayan Balsam in their own time, and perhaps even involve family, friends, neighbours or colleagues in the few weeks following the group clearance. THIS TASK IS URGENT AS THE PLANTS MUST BE REMOVED BEFORE THEY BEGIN TO SEED. We need to stamp out the growth of these weeds, particularly in certain areas of the park, BUT THIS MUST BE DONE IN THE CORRECT WAY if we do not want to spread this pest even further afield. Adults , children and young people are welcome to help with this 2008 clearance. For more details contact 01282 432423 ART IN THE PARK AFTERNOONTuesday August 26th 1.30pm – 3.30pm.We want 30, 6 – 10 year olds to join us for this special afternoon of Mosaic making and exploration of the world of Offshoots. Each child to be accompanied by a responsible adult. Venue: Offshoots classrooms, Offshoots garden and Towneley Park.
Having "Discovered Nature" at last year's successful children's activity afternoon, we hope that children, with their responsible adults will want to join us, to explore the natural world of Offshoots and to make Mosaics which will then be displayed near the play area at Riverside.
The Shuttle Bus will run from Burnley Centre Bus Station on the hour from 12 noon on Tuesdays througout the summer holidays, returning to the bus station at 10 minutes to the hour from the Hall gates.
All 6-10years olds are welcome, as long as they bring a responsible adult!!!
BOOKING IS NECESSARY FOR THIS EVENT: PHONE MAUREEN ON 01282 432423 OR PAT ON 01282 426449 Sunday September 14th as the Heritage and Woodland Day. This event will provide excellent entertainment for all the family. It is a free event and encourages active involvement in many actvities such as willow weaving, face painting, musical demonstrations, animal and bird demonstrations, plankers, and lots lots more. An ideal afternoon in the park, or a time to take non-Burnley residents on a free visit to Towneley Hall. PAST ACHIEVEMENTS
Thanks to funding from Lancashire County Council's Green Partnership Awards Environmental Grants, we have already been able to plant daffodil and bluebell bulbs at the Riverside Car Park.
In March we worked with Brunshaw and St. Stephen's schools to develop a project with Offshoots to explore recycling and permaculture issues, and ensure that the children are able to discuss these issues with their parents and families. 160 children have visited Offshoots and planted potatoes, sunflower and broadbean seeds.
Thanks also to funding from Burnley Community Network, we have purchased additonal benches and picnic tables which are located near the children's play area, and on the land by the Riverside car park. These pieces of park furniture have the additional facility that they can be used by people with disabilities. The benches have been bought and have been installed by the Park staff, and are located by the Riverside carpark.
What next? There is funding available from Veolia through the Onyx Trust, and we hope to gain money to purchase a new large piece of play equipment, suitable for older children and young teens, to be placed in the play area. Watch this space for further details.
