WHAT THE BOLTON EVENING NEWS SAID
Match Report Daisy Hill
The start of the season got under way with a winning draw at home against Daisy Hill. A magnificent knock by Gary Dyson saw him strike his first half century of the season going onto a great 60, with good support from Robin and some qickfire runs from Brett we achieved maximum batting points with 175 for 6.
Steve Price opened the bowling with pace and accuracy and with Brett and Barry not many clubs have a pace attack as strong.
Trigger started the season with a three wicket haul and golden arm Riley chipped in with his usual stand breaker ,with Gary dyson also getting two wickets.
Barry and Brett both had clean bowled victimns and only a strange umpiring request to remove Steve Price after 1 ball at pace prevented him from mopping up. Whilst the light was poor , wouldn't it have been common sense to have asked the skipper not to bowl him before he started the over???
Stll 16 points is a start and the season is now underway . A great fielding performance and a true man of the match performance from Gary Dyson.
Match Report Darcy Lever
Sunday,s game against local rivals saw us achieve our first win of the season and our points total of 36 for the weekend gives us a steady start to the campaign.
The game itself was a tense affair with good tight bowling by Brett and Steve Price, both playing against their old clubs, restricting Darcy to less tthan 50 at the half way stage.Whilst darcy then hit the self destruct button with an absurd run out, Barry Hamilton helped himself to a five wicket haul, with Brett's 2 wickets, 2 wickets for Trig the darcy innings ended all out for 133 setting us a target of 134 to win.
Our innings got off to a good start with the unconventional opening skills of Andy Caunce causing disruption to the bowlers, but just as yesterday as he has them baffled he baffles himself and gets himself out.Robin and Gary settled the ship or so it seemed until Gary caught the Darcy run out disease and was run out going for the fourth run,not often you see that in cricket, but we are Walshaw!
The game was always tight especially when Trigger and Brett disapeared into the shed but up stepped Tug to calm things down and with Robin , playing a skippers part guided us to the light at the end .Robin them left the heart racing getting out bowled to one he should sent back to Walshaw and that gentle plodder Mark Forest gave a few hearty blows to see us with plenty to spare.
Well Done lads a satisfactory start to the season.
Man of The Match
Robin Faulkner , closely followed by Terry Riley who once again won the annual drinking match with Darcy by an inings and two pints!!
the match reports for both the Astley &Tyldsley game and the Clifton cup match disapeared into Communigates black hole and the "techy" has not yet even managed to return my log.
Needless to say we had the best of a draw with A&T and took a pasting to Clifton in the cup.
Match Reports Standish and Cheshire Lines
A great weeken with a very convincing 8 wicket win against Standish in the league with a man of the match performance by opening bowler Steve Price.
Sunday saw us eventually find our way to Cheshire Lines in the Lancashire knockout and again achieve a satisfactory result and a place in the next round.
Batting first we reached a creditable 167 for 9 with our lower end getting a rare opportunity to show they know how to bat.
Barry Hamilton showed the bowlers the way with his man of the match performance taking 4 wickets.
Roll on the next round against Padiham at home date to be announced.
DONT FORGET THE FANTASY LEAGUE.
Although a little late with this ,again due to technical problems .We must acknowlede Danny's superb performance in scoring 180 not out in the recent second x1 game against A &T .
WELL DONE DANNY
Saturdays game with Golborne ended in an unbelieveable result.Golborne having won the toss put walshaw into bat and skittled us out for a meagre 123 with Rob's 37 the highlight of some poor batting.
The Golborne innings got off to a flier for Walshaw with pro Jonathan getting two wickets in his first over and when Brett took a wicket with his first over and the score on 0 for 3 there sppeared only one outcome, att 64 for 9 that also seemed the inevitable outcome .However Graham Marston with a superb knock of 82 not out and some stubborn batting from dave Aldred who faced 84 balls for his 2 not out led Golborne to the most unbelievable victory of the season.
When it's not your day it's not your day ,this showed when Aldred was clearly caught behind not given and then survived two other chances.
UNBELIEVABLE PART TWO !!
Sundays game against Elton provided yet another unbelievable day of cricket. This time the Walshaw boys turned the inevitable draw into a nail biting UNBELIEVABLE FINISH, winning the game by 4 wickets off the penultimate ball. This despite losing 17 overs to the weather. In truth a real pasting of local rivals Elton. Mark Goddard in his first game against the Warriors since leaving the club had a typical Mark knock of 38 runs(Elton's top score) the other ex Walshaw player,Elton skipper John Pemberton had a day he probably would like to forget along with pro Chris Hall whose over to Barry was probably the turning point of the game.
Barry Hamilton was the man of the match with his 6 wickets and 36 not out , with impressive performances from Danny Hornby with the bat and trigger with his 4 wickets and quickfire runs.
Although they ended up wicketless the opening bowling partnership of Collons and Price ensured the opposition got off to a slow start.
With performances like this the season is well and truly underway.
BRING ON CLIFTON
For the second time in a week Walshaw managed to beat not only their oponents but also the weather.
With the rain coming all around , brought on by Tony Kelly's rain dance, the Warriors were led to victory with another super all round performance by pro Jonathan Fielding .Ably supported by Steve Price with the ball, who was rewarded for his efforts with 4 wickets, and Brett Collins quickfire batting ,the 20 points were achieved, leaving us on equal points with Clifton and being up there with Atherton who we play on the 16th.
The WArriors are on the scent.
TEAMWORK WINS AGAIN
Saturday's game against Atherton was the BIG game of the season,Atherton being second in the table and obviously the BEN title favourite.
The game showed whilst we do need the big guns you can not beat good old fashioned teamwork. Greg Dimmery virtually played us on his own .Batting first after Robin won, or rather Steve Walsh lost, the toss Atherton got off to a very slow start. It wasn't long before Dimmery was at the crease but some super tight bowling by our three pronged attack together with first class fielding by everyone kept the Atherton score down to 141, 40 of these runs coming off the last four overs. At 141 for 2 after their 48 overs Walshaw were the happier side.
Despite a few wobbles and helped by Bretts cultured knock of 64 and a very controlled innings by Mark Forrest, who had perhaps the worst decision of the day just before the end .Barry and Bomber withstood Dimmery's efforts, to knock off the last few runs with 4 overs to spare.
IN RECOGNITION OF THIS SUPER TEAM PERFORMANCE THE MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD HAS BEEN AWARDED TO ALL ELEN PLAYER'S.
MATCH REPORT EDGWORTH
The Walshaw Warriors came out victorious in a tense game at Edgworth.Batting first on a reasonably dry track for Edgworth, the team struggled to 106 all out with a great knock from Danny Hornby who replaced Andy Caunce as opener. The team ended up under pressure with a couple of dubious umpiring decisions , particularly the LBW that dismissed Mark Forest from a bowler who consistently bowled down the off.
Superb fielding and the will to win paid off .A great second ball dismissal of Mike Davies from Brett signalling the intent to get the twenty points. Two major issues were clearly demonstrated to Mike Davies ,one of the inter league selectors, Robin is very clearly a better captain , than Tony ,"Iwont bowl Brett",Kelly and there is absolutley no better pro in the Association than Jonathan. His 8 for performance leading the team to a well earned if anxious victory.
MAN OF THE MATCH DANNY HORNBY
WHAT A WIN!!!
The game against Daisy Hill was certainly not one for those with feint hearts. Batting first we were soon in trouble with the first two batsman back in the shed with only three runs on the board.
At 42 for 7 it was looking like a disaster. A good knock of 22 by Barry Hamilton and a good show of careful batting from Bomber saw us sneak upto 67 all out, ascore we all felt would be at least 13 short.
Daisy set off like a train with 22 runs coming from the first two overs. To win from this position was impossible! How wrong we were .Trigger took 7 for 19 with Barry mopping up the other 3 for 30 runs.
Miracles do happen , but they are not good for our health.
A great team performance in the end , particularly in having the belief they could defend such a small total.
Match Report Darcy Lever
Sundays game saw us complete the first double of the season with a 7 wicket victory over local rivals.
A superb bowling performance by S Price and Brett together with the usual professional perfomance from Jonathan saw us wrap up the Darcy innings for 66.
Despite a nervous start which saw A.Caunce and Gary Dyson back in the pavillion for only 3 runs on the board. A steady performance from skipper Faulkner saw us home with ease.
A great 40 points for the weekend made even better with the results from Athertom being so Walshaw friendly.
