Abbots Langley Gilbert and Sullivan Society scoop NODA Awards!
Abbots Langley G&S Society (ALGSS) are celebrating after winning two awards from NODA (the National Operatic and Dramatic Association) – the benchmarking organisation for UK amateur theatre at the recent NODA Annual Awards Ceremony in London.
With a strong and talented production team of Philip Joslin (Musical Director), Andrew Taylor (Director) and Emma Southorn (Choreography), The Sorcerer, which ran at the Rudolph Steiner Theatre, Kings Langley in February, was recognised for its exceptionally good chorus performance. The society was nominated for the Kathleen Oyler Memorial Trophy for Choruswork and awarded the ‘Highly Commended’ grade (i.e. 3rd out of 240 societies within the London region). Life long ALGSS member, Anne Rycroft, accepted the award saying, “I am proud to belong to an artistic organisation that operates at such a consistently high standard and agree that The Sorcerer is worthy of such an accolade”.
Also, a personal honour of a NODA Scholarship was awarded to the leading man from The Sorcerer, Russell Stratton. Russell will now attend the annual NODA Summer School at Loughborough University in August, which is designed to nurture the talents of gifted amateur performers. Russell said, “Since my first amateur production last February, I have been on a wonderful rollercoaster and this is an incredible honour that I would never have expected. I am looking forward immensely to working with, and learning from, some of the best regarded amateur performers and directors around and thank ALGSS for all their support”

Festival triumph for ALGSS singers!!!
Local singers, Eve Rapley and Colin Walker from Abbots Langley G&S Society (ALGSS) took top honours at the recent St Albans Festival for the Performing Arts (29th & 30th November). Attracting singers from Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and north London, the festival classes were well represented with the singing classes adjudicated by professional singer and performer, Mr Graham Trew. Mr Trew commented on the high standards seen in the singing competitions and praised everyone who took part.
Bass baritone Colin, partnered by professional singer and teacher, Judith Colman, came 2nd in a highly competitive mixed duet class singing, ‘Bess you is my woman’ from the opera, ‘Porgy and Bess’. Colin was also 2nd in the songs from the shows class with, ‘Bring him home’ from ‘Les Miserables’. Mr Trew awarded Colin a commendation for his performance, commenting that he gave a “good performance, well supported with a good emotional sound”.
Eve, a soprano and first time performer at a festival won the Peter Jenkyn Memorial salver for the Gilbert & Sullivan class with her rendition of ‘Tis done I am a bride’ from ‘Yeoman of the Guard’. Eve also won the St Albans Operatic trophy for the light opera class with ‘The laughing song’ from ‘Die Fledermaus’. Mr Trew awarded Eve a diploma for both of her performances and said, ‘Eve has a fine voice, displaying good emotion and excellent phrasing”. Eve was also the highest place lady in the mixed operatic aria class, coming 2nd with Susanna’s aria from Mozart’s ‘Marriage of Figaro’. Eve said, “I am absolutely thrilled to have done so well in my first festival. I entered the classes to give me an opportunity to gain some more experience and to get feedback on my singing from a professional judge. I certainly did not expect to go home with two trophies!”.
Colin and Eve can next been seen performing with ALGSS in their forthcoming production of ‘Iolanthe’ at the Rudolph Steiner Theatre, February 16th-21st. The ticket hotline is 0845 644 0635 (calls charged at local rate) and bookings are being taken now. Anyone booking before 19th January will be entered in to a FREE champagne prize draw.
