Buxton beckons for G&S Best
Members of the local music and drama scene have always known that Abbots Langley Gilbert & Sullivan Society (ALGSS) have a reputation for putting on a good show. Following their recent highly acclaimed run of ‘Iolanthe’ at the Rudolf Steiner Theatre in Kings Langley, ALGSS can confirm they have been invited to perform ‘Iolanthe’ again on 2nd August at the International G&S Festival at the Buxton Opera House.
Special guests at ‘Iolanthe’ included Dacorum Mayor, Carol Green, who said, ‘The standards of performance and production are very high and ALGSS provided the audience with a wonderful evenings entertainment’. The Watford Observer went further in their review, commenting that the show was ‘near perfect’ and that leading man, Graham Jackson had ‘unlimited talent’.
The International G&S Festival has been running for 11 years and competition amongst amateur companies to get the chance to perform is fierce. The cream of amateur companies from the UK, USA and beyond perform for one night only in a fully adjudicated performance, culminating with an ‘Oscars’ style awards ceremony at the end of the 3 week festival. The amateur groups perform alongside professional companies including Opera Della Luna and the locally based Grims Dyke Opera, as well as having the opportunity to attend master classes by G&S greats including Gareth Jones and Valerie Masterson from the world famous D’Oyly Carte Opera Company.
Eve Rapley from ALGSS said ‘It’s a real honour to be selected as the Festival is the pinnacle as far as amateur G&S goes. The whole cast is really excited about having this opportunity and we can’t wait to start rehearsing for ‘Iolanthe’ again in June!’.
This talented company can be seen performing next at the Henderson Hall in Abbots Langley on July 1st and 2nd as part of the Abbots Langley Festival of the Arts. With a programme containing G&S favourites as well as numbers from ‘Mary Poppins’, ‘The Jungle Book’ and ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’, the evening is sure to be
