Saturday 7th 6.30 pm Compass Theatre £5.00 Hindu Cultural Association present Tagore’s musical opera Valmiki Pratibha (The Genius of Valmiki) by The Tagoreans.
Influenced by the spectacle of European opera, Rabindranatah Tagore , India’s first Nobel Laureate, wrote his first drama opera Valmiki Pratibha at the age of twenty. A large cast musical drama, which is sublimely religious and intellectually engaging, was presented for the first time in the west in 2005.
The music drama Valmiki Pratibha describes how the bandit Valmiki reforms his ethos, is blessed by goddess of learning Saraswati and composes the Indian epic Ramayana. Through it, Tagore explores a wide range of dramatic styles and emotions, including usage of Indian folk and traditional raga based compositions blended with his adaptation of traditional English and Irish folk melodies. Its operatic presentation is quite unique.
