Sat 7th Dec 2002

This was the best BFC meeting we have ever had at the Bull! Despite the beer being small studio 1 was full to bursting. There were lots of new faces, maybe due to the two local papers doing articles about the BFC. Once again I started off with three numbers, “Northern Industrial Town”, “Never Be the Sun” (as requested by Ferris) and finally Spam joined me on guitar for “Claire Island” and did an excellent job on all the twinkly bits. Next up we had Pete who was really good, he had obviously done this sort of thing before and I’m sure I’ve seen him somewhere before.

Hamish, James and Madge

Then we had the welcome return of Hamish, James & Madge; they played some wonderful jigs and reels.

Seamus

Followed by the man from Fermanagh, Seamus, with three great numbers.

Sarah

Final floorspot of the evening, Barnet’s very own Folk-babe, Sarah, did two of her own numbers and dragged me up to join her in a rendition of “Fairy tale of New York”

Nuada

After the break!! Ladies and gentleman will you please give it up big time for NUADA!! Sam Burke, Ferris Jay & Ruth Bramley absolutely mesmerised all of us with a trip around The Celtic World with some beautiful songs and tunes played straight from the heart! They played many tracks from their new album “Atlas” plus some of the old songs that had the feet stomping and the hands clapping. They finished their set with the Bob Pegg classic, “The Last Dance”.

Molly

Thank you Nuada, you were real stars!

Have a great Christmas, see you at the New Year meeting on the 4th January 2003!

God Bless!

Another great turn out

What a fantastic turn out, a great mix of styles and everyone performed brilliantly. The wonderful thing about the BFC is it is always different. The lay out of the room was much as I found it, so I thought why not lets play in the round. Standing by the door when the evening was in full swing, looked like my idea of the perfect folk club.

The audience enjoyed the evening

What really made the evening a success was the numbers that turned out, and the way the audience warmed to the occasion. As a performer its a great feeling when this happens it makes all the practising worth while.

I started the evening

I started of the evening as usual with a few numbers to break the ice so to speak (well we did have some snow lately). “The Long Miles Home” a Richard Thomson number followed by “Help Save the Youth of America” a Billy Bragg special. I finished up by performing the first song I ever sang at the BFC “Danny Farrell” a moving story about an Irish tinker written by Pete St John, the same guy who wrote “The Rare Ould Times

Seamus & Barry

Next up was Pete who gave us three numbers, the last being the famous “Lord Franklin”. We then had first timer Mark, who writes his own songs and very well crafted they were too. Nice one Mark you’re now a member of BFC!! The rest of the line up may be slightly wrong (well I was on my third beer and enjoying the evening) Jan & Neil, always different, always entertaining. Next we had Seamus & Barry I just love the song about the gypsies, nice mandolin playing

Keith on the harp

Then there was Keith playing a beautiful Harp what a pleasure to listen to those wonderful tunes.

Sarah or is it Joan Baez?

Robin then gave us some traditional tunes on his fiddle (what a sweet sound it makes) he finished with an English folk song.

Dave was next with some of his own songs, love the guitar style definitely South Africa. Sarah the Folk Babe, the only lady on the bill tonight entertained us with two of her own songs and the one about the woman who could never be satisfied. nice one Sarah.

A good one!

Andy not having planned to play, took to the floor and gave us a couple of Bob Dylan specials. Last of all I came back for one song for one for the road. Possibly the best version of “Whiskey in the Jar” I have ever had the privilege of taking part in, with all those wonderful musicians playing along as well as the audience singing the chorus. This has to go down as one of the best nights we have ever had.

God Bless
See you next time

The Internationale

This truly was an international evening of folk music and as ever nothing was planned
ok I knew the Turkish music was coming, but that was all.

First up as always yours truly, J.J. I sang two songs Broad Majestic Shannon and Viva la quinta Brigarda no reason other than I felt like it.!

next...

The Connors two lads and two girls all brothers and sisters they were fabulous and I loved the harmonies. It is so inspiring to see young people singing folk music, you brought a tear to my eye!

next...

Was our Turkish music and dancing! yes dancing first time ever at the BFC Chris the organiser of the outfit told the audience some finer details about this music! all I can recall is “belly dancer”and the Spanish girl who sang the last song!

next....

Jan and Neil and friends well two friends who's names I can’t remember, but they were all wonderful. Beautiful music from a whole range of instruments. Including Guitar, mandolin, fiddle, Clarinet and flute...........well done guys, we loved it!

next....

Roland who looked remarkably like Billy Connolly, not just a great raconteur but a fine guitar player. Roland gave us All Along the Watch Tower and a instrumental piece of his own........nice one!

next....

Dave from South Africa played one of own songs a sad number if I remember, but his second piece certainly livened things up. I just love that south African style of playing the guitar.

next....

Rick with his own style of guitar picking and his own songs always entertaining!

next....

Jo and Ashley, two guitars and Ashley sang two classic folk songs Where have all the Flowers gone and Colours the Donovan song! everyone joined in as it was Ashley’s first time outside his front room!

next.....

Tony the man with the big voice! and a great choice of songs, sang straight from the heart!

and last but not least,,,,,

Keith and his Celtic Harp, what can I say, a truly wonderful way to end a great evening at The Barnet Folk Club!

Thank you one and all!

March 18th 2005 meeting

Once again a truly brilliant night for the club since moving to ArtsDepot things have gone from strength to strength we had 12 floorspots and more than 60 audience, and what a great atmosphere. All the performers were on top form the audience listened intently, and between us we had a truly memorable evening. The enthusiasm for the club is growing and the word is out! I receive many phone calls and e.mails all the time regarding BFC and one caller asked “ can you describe what it is like at your folk evenings” “ well I said, Its like having a party at someone else's house”. But someone else's house is our local arts centre. I am so pleased its taken off! we have a great mix of performers at BFC from a sixteen year old guitarist and singer to a retired guy who plays Celtic Harp, and every thing in between, I have some photos for this month taken by Simon Hart of just some of the performers: see you next time
