2008 Summer events at Charlton House

(no need to enter in advance, just turn up)

Rawle Allicock's blindfold simul' against up to 10 opponents (you see the board, he doesn't!)

Club 15-minute handicap championship (the higher-rated player gets less time)

Games night (try out Go, Shogi, Chinese chess and other exotic games)

Club Annual General Meeting

The Kent Summer QuickPlay league is underway. Team captain Alan hopes to select every interested member for at least one match.

The regular club championship is also in progress, to be completed before the AGM.

All other Tuesdays: Normal club night

The summer 2008 calendar has been aranged (for dates see above).

Shogi

We welcome the playing of chess variants and similar games of skill, e.g. Shogi (Japanese chess), Xiangqi (Chinese chess), Go, Draughts.

Amongst our members we already have good Draughts, Shogi and Xiangqi players.

Newcomers are welcome and if you play chess as well then even better!

Lee Chess Club

Lee Chess Club with the Kent County Cup, about 1913 (by permission of Mike Wiltshire).

Lee Chess Club no longer exists but was the top team in the area a century ago, winning the County Cup several times.

Its best player O.C.Müller (second row, fourth from left) played in several master tournaments between 1890 and 1925.

Bobby Fischer, 1943-2008

Bobby Fischer, world champion 1972-75, died on 17th January 2008.

Following the media coverage of his 1972 world championship match against Boris Spassky, membership of Charlton Chess Club increased to nearly one hundred.

Kent County Cup winners 2008

Charlton beat Lewisham 3.5 - 2.5 in the final on 11th May 2008 to win the County Cup for the first time since 2000.

Five games were drawn and David Tucker won the decisive game.
