Compact Disc Review
By Kirby Watson

The Way – An Introduction to the Art of Aikido
The learning of martial arts took a giant step forward with the advent of video technology. For several years now it has been possible to buy video tapes, both basic and advanced, on virtually any martial art you care to mention. Now the learning process has been taken one step further with the advent of digital technology and the appearance of learning material on compact discs.
Although not yet that common in martial arts circles, interactive compact discs will eventually become the norm as they offer so much more than video tapes. Pioneering this new format is Aikido instructor Jon Stokoe, 4th Dan. His first CD, entitled "The Way – An Introduction to the Art of Aikido" is the first of its kind and is already selling well in the Aikido community.
The disc is aimed mainly at beginners and those thinking of taking up Aikido and wanting a glimpse of what to expect. It opens up with a chase scene which shows the practical application of Aikido in a self defence situation. You are then given the option to view the chase again, this time in slow motion. The inclusion of a slow motion button on the disc is a definite bonus as there is a lot of action to be viewed.
On the main menu you are given several choices which lead to even further options. You are given the option to watch everything from warm up exercises, through a typical class, to advanced counters and multiple attack situations. Working with the sword and the staff are also included to a limited extent but these weapons do form an integral part of Aikido practice and it is only right that they be given some time on the disc.
Also included for the benefit of martial arts practitioners is a very comprehensive glossary of Japanese terms. This covers everything from body parts, to dojo etiquette, to definitions of Aikido principles. The glossary is not limited to Aikido terminology and all martial artists can use this as a reference point.
For those wanting more information the disc allows you to visit the website of the CUA Aikido Union. Here you will find more information about Jon Stokoe Sensei, his association and its history.
The disc has original backing music but does not contain any narrative. As a sampler for beginners and those wishing to find out more about Aikido it is not meant to be a technical presentation. Further discs containing technical information are already being produced, however, and these have a narrative explaining the finer points of Aikido practice. Stokoe Sensei plans to bring out up to four discs per year, each lasting around thirty minutes, and containing three or four principles per disc. The intention is to create a comprehensive library of discs covering all aspects of Aikido from first setting foot on the mat to advanced stages.
