Monuments and Memorials of Old St Mary's

Memorial and inscription to John Skenington (Cansick, p.15)

Many memorials from the old nave of St. Mary's, and tombstones from the churchyard, are now lost. Some were recorded by F.T.Cansick, in "A Collection of Curious and Interesting Epitaphs" (London, 1875), from which the details and illustrations on this page are taken.

Harington Monument (formerly in church)

HEARE LYETH INTERRED YE BODYE OF ROBERT HARINGTON, SECOND SON OF SR. IOHN HARINGTON, OF EXTON, IN THE COVNTIE OF RVTLAND, KNIGHT, WHO LIVED INCVMBENT OF THIS CHVRCH 50 YEARES, AND DIED THE 24 DAY OF OCTOBER, IN THE YEAR OF OVR LORD GOD 1610, BEING OF YE AGE OF 80.

Here lyeth ye Body of Dame IANE MVSTERS,
Late Wife of Sr. Iohn Mvsters, Knt.
Daughter of Sr. Francis Basset,
of TEHEDDY in ye Covnty of Cornwall, Knt.
She Departed this Life ye 17th of Sept Anno Dni 1691
Aged 67 years.

(Cansick, p. 5) The slate tombstone of Lady Basset, Jane's mother, is set into the floor of the nave area at the foot of the steps to the Tower.
