ESME R. IRWIN - 1931-2001
Esmé died on 18th August 2001 after a long illness and will be greatly missed.
She joined Gunnersbury W.C.C.in 1948 and remained a loyal member for the rest of her life. For thirty-six of these years, 1953-1958 and 1964-1993, Esmé was the Honorary Secretary of the Club and was always ready to help in any way she could.
Esmé played for Gunnersbury, Middlesex, the south of England, Young England in Holland and England on a tour of South Africa.
Esmé’s father was a fast bowler who took 100 wickets for his club three seasons and he used to take Esmé to matches with him. Little wonder therefore, that she became a fast bowler when her turn came to play. She was also a competent batsman.
Later on in her career, Esmé became a qualified umpire and also helped with scoring, coaching and selecting. Her administrative duties did not finish with the club as she held many posts with Middlesex and the women’s Cricket Association and was awarded the Queen’s Silver Medal for her services to Women’s Cricket.
