Yorkshire Rose Poetry Competition

Closing Date: 1-Jan & 1 June
Details: 3 new ongoing competitions for Northern folk: Yorkshire Rose (for poems on the countryside, wildlife and fauna); Northern Lads and Lasses (for poems on people, places, town and country); and Victoria's Vestibule (for Victorian verse and poetic short stories)

Details: For poems with the title 'My Cup of Tea'. The winning four poems will be published on mugs to celebrate the opening of Bank Street Arts in Sheffield. Poems should be a maximum of 9 lines, with no more than 40 characters per line.

Michael Marks Awards for Poetry Pamphlets
Closing Date: 20-Mar-09
£5,000 for the following categories: Poetry Award - for an outstanding work of poetry published in pamphlet form in the UK during 2008, and Publishers' Award - for an outstanding UK publisher of poetry in pamphlet form, on the basis of their publishing programme in 2008. Judges: Ian McMillan, Jackie Kay and Richard Price.

Live Canon 2009 Poetry Competition

Details: For poems of up to 40 lines. 30 shortlisted poets will be performed in Live Canon's performance at Greenwich Theatre. Special prize for any writer living, working or studying in the London Borough of Greenwich.

Inspired by Burns National Competition

Details: Online poetry & prose competition – max 500 characters, including spaces. 1 entry per person. A prestigious judging panel, included award-winning author Andrew O'Hagan, will choose a winner to receive a Creative Set of Jura Malt Whisky, with ten runner up prizes of whisky also available.

Buxton Poetry Competition 2009
Closing Date: 01-Apr-09
Details: For poems on the theme of Stone. There are three categories - Open Category for poets over 18 yrs, Young People's category for poets aged between 12 and 18, and Children's category for poets aged 11 and under. All entries must be posted with a completed application form. The 2009 judges are Fleur Adcock and Michael Schmidt. The open category prizes are £300, £200 and £100. The Young people's and Children's prizes are book tokens.

The Virginia Warbey Poetry Prize 2009

The Times Stephen Spender Prize 2009 for Poetry in Translation | Closing Date: 22-May-09
Details: Translate a poem from any language, classical or modern, into English. Three categories: open, 18 and under, and 14 and under.

Keats-Shelley Prize 2009

Details: 2 competitions - an essay and a poem. £3000 in prizes. The essay can be on any aspect of the lives and works of John Keats, P B Shelley, Mary Shelley or Lord Byron, and should be of 2,000 - 3,000 words, including quotations.It should focus on the theme 'Find'. It may be of any length up to 50 lines.

The Poetry Society Centenary Celebration Competition

Details: Theme: 'Villains'. Exclusive to Poetry Society members who are also members of a Poetry Society Stanza. For poems of up to 30 lines. Maximum 2 poems. First prize: a free Poetry Prescription (your poetry appraised by an expert) or 1 year’s free Poetry Society membership (or equivalent); plus publication in Poetry News, the Poetry Society’s membership magazine, and on the Poetry Society website. 2 runners up also published on the website. The theme of the competition is the antithesis of the National Poetry Day theme of ‘Heroes and Heroines’. Winners announced on National Poetry Day.
