Thank you all for inviting us to give the sermon today. February 22nd is Guide Thinking Day. It is the birthday of our founders - Lord and Lady Baden Powell. We celebrate this day by thinking about the Guides and Brownies, Cubs and Scouts all over the world. Today we would like to extend those thoughts - and think about everybody - everywhere.

My name is Friendship. Every night and day, I knock upon the doors of the world. I cry to be let in. Too many times I am turned away, because people fear - but when someone lifts the latch, I walk straight in! On this day, Thinking Day, when thoughts and friendship travel far and wide, I come amongst you and welcome you all as my friends.

Finland is my home, where the sun shines at midnight shines on mountain snow; where work and service light us, like our sun. Friendship and peace are the aims of girl guides in our land. Our hope is that soon in all the world there shall be no more night.

Brazil is my country. Beneath the Southern Cross, the mountains plunge into a palm fringed sea. This wonderland, our home, teaches us Guides reverence for all creation, and to love our friends.

Thinking Day is traditionally about thinking about guides and brownies, cubs and scouts in other countries. We have demonstrated that. But, today we also want to remember all the other people who we care about. To do that we would like to invite 7 of you to join us at the front.

Stars that shine together form a galaxy. Flowers that grow together create a garden. People that stand together begin a city. People who work together make a difference. If we value each others differences, and make friendship a priority, we can make a wonderful world together.

Watch the flames closely please. Notice that the light from each candle is the same - though on the outside the candles are different. The candles are like all of us - we wear different clothes, speak different languages, eat different foods, and sing different songs. And yet we all belong to the same human race. Inside we are all the same. Let us remember that - try to be good friends to one another - to be kind and thoughful to everyone that we meet. Together we can make a more understanding, a more peaceful - a better world.
