Results Update - Aug & Sept
17 Aug SUFC 1 Hampton 0. A good opening day win, with U's strengthened by recent signings Mark Watson, Danny Bolt and Danny Hodges. Watson scored the only goal from a Bolt corner.
20 Aug Grays 0 SUFC 0. Another good result, against big-spenders who are one of the title favourites. Same line up as Saturday:- Dunn, Beale, Palmer, Hodges, Gonsalves, Hollands, Honey, Corbett, Bolt, Watson, Fowler.
Mike Mison, Dave Timothy, Danny Brooker and Craig Brown are all injured and Matt Gray has not been well.
24 Aug Bedford 2 SUFC 1. After a shaky start, Matt Fowler's goal put us in charge and we had several chances to make thje game safe early in the 2nd half, but Tom Dunn's failure to cut out a corner gifted the equaliser and a mistake by Ryan Palmer set up Bedford's winner.
26 Aug SUFC 3 Harrow 0. A convincing win, much better in the 2nd period after a dire first half, left us in 5th spot. Fowler opened teh scoring on 61 minutes from Watson's headed flick, then Danny Hodges headed in Corbett's free-kick as Harrow lost their rag. Watson scored the pick of the bunch with ten to go from Bolt's sublime chipped pass.
31 Aug Canvey Island 1 SUFC 1. A deserved point but it might have been 3 after Hodges hit the bar and then Bolt sprung the offside trap to put us ahead after 12. Canvey levelled when Duffy's cross floated in on the wind at the far post. After the break Palmer and Bolt hit the woodwork again and Fowler missed a sitter before Watson earned a penalty. He took the kick himself but it was easily saved.
04 Sep SUFC 4 Ford United 1. After a listless start, in which we let them have too much of the ball, the game came to life when Danny Bolt blasted home a free-kick from all of 35 yards. Ford were shaken and lost their composure but, to their credit, fought back and equalised before he from a swift break with a goal that was well made and executed. We were sharper after the re-start, winning the ball further up the field. Watson made it 2-1 from Hodges header down at a corner and then watson added the third with a crashing header from Bolt's corner. The csoring ended with the away keeper catching a Bolt corner but then inexplicably dropping it over his own line. Team now unchanged in 6 games and in 6th place with 11 points. Bailey, Hanlan and Gray all came on as substitutes.
07 Sep Billericay 2 SUFC 0. No complaints about losing to the best team we have met so far, although we did ok after going two down in 8 minutes. Veteran Andy Pape started in goal, which most felt was tough on youngster Tommy Dunn, and Matt Hanlan came in upfront for the injured Matt Fowler. Despite some good moments after the break, we found their defence very solid.
10 Sep SUFC 3 Chesham Utd 2. A night of mixed emotions. We began strongly, Watson snatched at his shot when well clear, then Bolt had a free-kick from all of 40 yards tipped over the bar Chesham scored against the run of play with a brilliant chip from 18 yards and then dominated the half, going two-up on the interval with a penalty needlessly conceded by Honey.
The second period was all one-way traffic again, but the U's didn't create a real opening until Timothy and Bailey came on for Beale and Honey. Fowler made it 2-1 with an instinctive finish from Bolt's diagonal chip and the Fowler ended a mazy run with a pass to Bailey who was brought down from behind. Bolt equalised from the spot and then it was only a question of whether the winner would follow. At the other end Pape might as well have been reading a newspaper. Bolt saw several free-kicks charged down before finally knocking in a dipping cross which found an unmarked Fowler to head the winner. Watson should have settled any late nerves when put clear by Fowler but his low shot went the wrong side of the post. Mike Mison, Danny Brooker and Craig Brown are still on the inujured list.
14 Sep SUFC 1 Kingstonian 1. A mixed day for Danny Hodges: he missed a sitter, set up our goal for Lewis Gonsalves but hurt his knee in doing so and now looks like being out of action for 3-6 months. How we missed him when Wingfield rose unmarked to head K's level, after Watson had also missed an easy headed chance.
17 Sep Purfleet 0 SUFC 2. Our best result so far and really good second half display. Fowler opened the scoring against the run of play but we dominated after that, with watson heading number two on 87 minutes. Matt Ottley, on loan from Crawley, shored up the defence with Hodges sidelined. Bailey again kept out Honey from midfield. Now up to 6th in the table. Shame about FA Cup draw away to Heybridge on the 28th Sept.
21 Sep SUFC 3 Aylesbury 2. More cracking GGL goals to enjoy. We started well but went behind to their first threatening raid. Scott Corbett equalised with a stunning 20yd volley and Gary McCann saved well from Matt Hanlan's close range header. Danny Bolt made it 2-1 with yet another free-kick from distance but we failed to finish them off after the break despite loads of good chances. The inevitable equaliser came with 6 minutes to go and we felt hard done by, until Nick Bailey cut in from the left and shot from 25 yards to net his first senior goal and put us up to 4th. In celebrating he ran half way to Colston Avenue. Matt Ottley continued in defence, with Hanlan in for the injured Watson.
24 Sep Heybridge 1 SUFC 3. It didn’t take long for Nick Bailey to add his second senior goal, bagging the third in an excellent 3-1 win away to Heybridge, just 4 days before the repeat fixture in the FA Cup. The home side went ahead on 44 minutes but Bolt managed to equalise before the break. A stunning Matt Fowler volley put us 2-1 ahead as we controlled the second half.
28 Sep Heybridge 1 SUFC 1. We could not end the month on a wining note as this FA Cup 2nd Qual. Round tie ended all square. Mark Watson opened the scoring on 22 but, in a bad tempered game typical of our visits to Heybridge, they equalised with about ten to go. |
