Band members

The band went through a number of incarnations between the time it formed in 1978 and the official demise in 1981. In that time, several members of the band left and returned (very much like 'This is Spinal Tap')

The original line up was:-

Smart Alek (Chillo) - vocals
Johnny Remould - guitar
Dick Debauch (Alan) - drums
Jack Plug - sound engineer

When it became clear that Smart Alek's vocals weren't up to singing the diversity of songs (and Dick's drumming was not 4/4 enough, they swapped.

This, along with the addition of a bassist (Andy), found at the Mayfly festival in Oxpens, gave us the first band to be recorded in the original (one and only) Manor studios (Horspath).

So we had:-

Dick Debauch - vocals
Johnny Remould - guitar
Andy - bass
Smart Alek - vocals
Jack Plug - sound engineer

They laid down some of the first seminal tracks - Cricket - "wickets, bats and a load of balls"
Probo's problems - "Probo's problems, Probo's problems, Probo's problems"
Wheatley Park Upper school - "Wheatley Park Upper school, the teachers there so very cruel"
Wild thing - yes, that Wild thing.

By the time we reached the Summer of 1979, the infamous Holton Gig at the Village Hall was being prepared (18th August 1979). Destined to live forever in history (as a Quartz Lock song)Holton Gigs - three bands, "only 30p to pay" and a Village hall floor to ruin. Heady times indeed.

The line-up had changed again and by now was:-

Probo (Jeremy) - vocals
Jack Plug - guitar
Chillo (aka Smart Alek) - bass
Hedgepig (what was his name?) - drums

With two bands on the supporting schedule - "And Support" and "Astro-lint" - it was a well attended gig, good value and the tapes still exist!!

The band were well into their touring schedule, now, with gigs at:-
(a) the King's Arms (20th October 1979) "Bring back hanging" thanks David Higgs,
(b) The Railway (10th November 1979) "Are you ready, Remould?"
(c) The Railway (17th December 1979) - headlining with a supporting band - Volta.

By this time the line-up had changed (again). Chillo was off at College and so the band was:-

Probo - vocals
Jack Plug - Guitar
Johnny Remould - bass
Hedgepig (still can't remember) - drums

More to follow, along with pictures, when I find the two (S)crapbooks.

Remember these people?

After the demise of The Leftovers

After The Leftovers ceased in about 1981?, a succession of groups came and went - many of which had been originally inspired by the energy and vitality of The Leftovers. The roll call includes:-
(a) The Splitz - arose from the wreckage of The Leftovers;
(b) Easy Credit terms - what a rendition of Pink Floyd's 'Money';
(c) Quartz Lock - the original Wheatley supergroup, comprising of members of The Leftovers, Volta and Electric Chaos - they nearly played "Wheatley Rock 1980", but it never happened.
