Description of the Memorial Window

Many people comment on how beautiful the large memorial window is. This was retained as a major feature of the redesign of the former John Wesley Church into the Community Resource Centre.

The top three panels depict the three great virtues of Christian Life as expressed in Paul's letter to the Corinthians in difficult times, FAITH, HOPE and LOVE.
The Anchor of HOPE scroll reads "Happy is he whose hope is in the Lord"
The Cross of Faith - The Pilgrim receives the Crown of Glory. The scroll reads "Well done, thou good and faithful servant"
The Heart of Love - The scroll reads "To Godliness and brotherly kindness and to kindness and Charity" (which is LOVE in action)

To the left is a picture of Stephen the first Christian martyr, being stoned to death with the approval of Saul who was committed to destroy followers of Christ. Jonathon and David who were great friends prepare to go into battle, left hands clasped in brotherhood.

To the right is a picture of Miriam, the sister of Moses rejoicing with cymbals thanking God for allowing Moses to lead his people from captivity in Egypt. Moses is looking down from the top of Mount Nebo to his soldiers in battle, assuring them of victory as long as his arms are raised. Finally, weak from effort, Moses needs two beareres to hold his arms aloft until the battle in the valley is won.

The lower centre 3 panels show the Christian Pilgrim being given spiritual armour by his supporters in the window to the left and right. At the base of these three panels are the words
"Be thou faithful unto death. To the Glory of God"
The window was installed in 1920 in remembrance of the members of the Wesley Church who served the country during the Great War. A dedication at the foot of the window indicates this.

The lowest part of the window is in subdued lighting, warning of the dangers encountered in terms of a soldier going into battle and the journey of life. The upper part of the window is clear and bright in keeping with the success of the pilgrim's journey armed with spiritual gifts.

Most of the panels depict episodes from the Bible in times of stress and the importance of the devotion to duty.
