SCOUT CAMP SNOWBALL PLANTATION

The troop met at the church hall at 6 o’clock. We put our bags with the kit in for the camp into the van. Then we got on to the mini bus and travelled to York. It took about an hour to get there. It was wet and soggy when we got to the camp site in York. We put the kit on to trolleys and then pulled them to the camp site. We then put the gear in to the hut ready for when the tents where up. We then put to the mess tent up first and then the patrol tent. The girls had help from the young leaders to put the girl’s tent up. Then we put our personal kit into the patrol tent. We then got the hot dogs and put on the burner to cook them. Laura and little Sam cut the buns for hot dogs; we eat them and went to bed. We woke up the next morning about 7.30ish and we went for a wash. We then got breakfast food which was sausage, bacon, egg, beans, bread, and cereal. After eating all the food we washed up and dried up and put the equipment away into the patrol box. We messed around in the patrol tent while we waited to find out what we were going to do during the day. We then re-pitched the mess tent and then the patrol tent with help from the young leaders. The other patrol moved their whole patrol tent because there was a big puddle at the door way. We then got the lunch food which was sandwiches which were ham, cheese and jam we also had fruit and crisps. We then washed up the plates and that. We then got told of by the leaders because some of the scouts were messing around. We then had a knife and axe lesson which was lead by the young leaders, during the lesson we were told about different knifes and how to handle them. Then we had a go using an axe on a log, some of us then had a go at sawing. The other scouts started to cook the tea which was chicken in a source with vegetables and pasta which one patrol under cooked. We washed up after a long wait while waiting for the water to boil.
We then played a wide game called capture the flag; Carls patrol won all the games. We then went to the camp fire which was big and we sang songs while sat or stud around the fire. Then we went back to the campsite and had hot drinks like hot chocolate and cups of soup and mars bars. We then went to bed and talked in the tent and then fell asleep about 2 o’clock. We woke up Sunday morning and it was really cold, we went for a wash. We then got all of the equipment ready for the breakfast; breakfast was eggy bread and cereal. We washed up and made sure the pans were clean for inspection. We fell in around the flag and had an inspection of our mess tent which did not go down very well as our equipment was not to standard. We then had an inspection of our patrol tent, after that we took our uniforms of and packed our personal kit and fell in around the flag pole so we could go play a game on the main field. When on the main field we played football for a bit while the baseball pitch was getting sorted out. We then played the leaders at baseball and lost! Ryan had the best catch of the game as he caught Cliff out. After the game we went back to the campsite and packed up the tents and took it all the van and put our uniforms on the mini bus and went back to the campsite to fall out around the flag and have a picture of the whole group. We then boarded the mini bus and went home. When we arrived at the church hall we unpack the van and went home.

SCOUT HIKE (CHOP GATE)

We set of from Darlington at 8am on the Moors Bus Service, after changing buses at Middlesbrough we where well on our way to Chop Gate in the North Yorkshire Moors. We arrived in Chop Gate at about 10am, below the cloud line. We walked down to the village hall to the toilets before we set off. After setting our maps and toilet break we set off across the fields towards Westcote Farm and onto the Moors. The Scouts took turns in Map Reading and guiding along the route. As we got higher up we found ourselves shrouded in mist, despite this visibility was rather good as far as compass work was concerned. The weather however did nothing for the views and scenery that we should have seen, despite this we plodded along towards the Cleveland Way about 2k west of the Wain Stones. As we approached the Cleveland Way you could see the wind blowing the mist up and over the hills. As we headed west we came across a memorial to a rambler at a view point. On the plinth where directions and names of places that you should be able to see from the view point, all we saw was cloud! After coming down of he top we stopped for lunch at about 1pm. Whilst having lunch the mist got thicker so we the leaders decided to cut lunch short and head of down the hill towards a café so we could finish our lunch of. Once lunch was over we headed of towards the Gliding Club and across Bilsdale Moor back to Chop Gate. Thankfully the mist was starting to clear so we could see a bit of the landscape around us. We arrived back in Chop Gate at approx 5pm just in time to listen to the last ½ hour of the England match in the World Cup. We set of back to Darlington at 6pm from Chop Gate and arrived back at approx 7.45pm. It was a great enjoyed by everyone despite the weather. Looking forward to our next hike out.
