Sunday 20 July Birdoswald Roman Fort and RAF Spadeadam
Philip Abramson, Archaeological Advisor for Defence Estates, has offered to lead a tour of Birdoswald fort and RAF Spadeadam in Cumbria, providing snapshots of military history from the Roman period to the Cold War era. The bleak moorland area of Spadeadam was chosen as an ideal testing ground for Blue Streak, Britain’s only intermediate range ballistic missile in the 1950s, and in 2004 English Heritage was asked to investigate the dramatic concrete remains, now a scheduled monument. Everyone must travel on the transport provided because of the nature of the site, and the names of those attending are required in advance. Those wishing to be picked up by the minibus en route should contact the Secretary.
Itinerary
9.30am Minibus leaves from the car park in Freeman’s Place (by the former Bowling Alley below the Gala theatre) in Durham
10.30am Arrive at Birdoswald for a visit to the fort and museum, and stretch of Hadrian’s Wall with graffiti (normal admission charges apply)
12.30pm Lunch - bring a pack lunch or visit the tea room at Birdoswald.

2.45pm Tour of RAF Spadeadam cold war sites
