The Produce Show
 | As always competition is fierce in the produce show. There are three sections - vegetables and flowers, flower arrangements and pot plants, and baking and home produce.
The home produce section includes several 'set recipe' classes. The most photogenic of these this year was the lemon cut-and-come-again cake. |
|
Vegetables
 | | The vegetable section was a little disappointing this year as the strange weather patterns had put some of the ripening patterns out of kilter. As well as the individual vegetable there is a class for a tray of any four vegetables and this fine selection was entered by Becky Fenwick who won the most points over all in the vegetable classes. |
|
Fruit
 | | The show is often a little early for good sized cooking apples but this year with the Feasy falling as late as is possible, there were sone good examples. |
|
So what's this?
 | | Yes - we can see it's a cabbage, however, according the the pack of plants in which it came from the nursery, it should have been a sprout. Unfortunately, as in several classes, it was the only entry though even if it had had some competition it would still have deserved to win. |
|
Flower Arranging
 | | The flower arranging classes always include some topical subjects to stretch the flower arranger's ingenuity. This year the World Cup attracted no entries (maybe flower arrangers just aren't interested in football) and the Queen's 80th birthday celebrations, shown here. |
|
Posy for a Small Bridesmaid
 | | A posy for a small bridesmaid gave scope for some very pretty arrangements |
|
Flower fun
 | | An original flower arrangement class was that for a weed and wild flower arrangement in a child's wellie. There did not seem to be an undue number of children hopping around the village when it rained. |
|
Cookery
 | There are also classes for jams and marmalade and other home preserves. This year the competition was for strawberry jam, rhubarb and ginger jam and marmalade. Strangely there are often entries from the men of the village for the 'Marmalade' class but rarely for any of the other cookery classes.
Our picture shows rhubarb & ginger jam but in a load of jars it could be anything. |
|
Plants
There are two classes in the pot plants section - a foliage plant and a flowering plant. It is worth explaining that in case you get the wrong idea as to the type of pot plants the residents of Aldbrough are producing. Again there was a shortage of entries but the only foliage plant was a two metre tall rubber plant. I was brought to the hall on a garden trolley and put one in mind of those 'Heavy Plant Crossing' signs |
The Trophies
 | The person with the most points in each of the three sections, Vegetables, Flower Arranging and Home Produce, gets a trphy and this year they were these rather splendid silver trays. The Vegetable trophy was won by Becky Fenwick, the Home Produce by Sue Martin and the Flower Arranging by Janet Hall.
Unfortunately our pictures of them with their trophies were not good enough to use here. |
